Announced on October 15, 2025, it was built using Apple’s third-generation 3-nanometer technology and first appeared in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and Apple Vision Pro. These are Apple’s launch specifications and performance claims—not independent verification of the process node or benchmark results.
What changed in Apple’s M5 chip?
The M5’s central architectural change is a Neural Accelerator in every core of its next-generation 10-core GPU. Apple says this design is intended to accelerate AI workloads that run on the GPU, complementing the chip’s 16-core Neural Engine. In practical terms, the accelerators are hardware resources for supported GPU-based AI computation; their presence does not mean every AI app will automatically run faster.
Apple also specified an up-to-10-core CPU, comprising up to four performance cores and six efficiency cores, plus a media engine and 153GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. Apple described that bandwidth as nearly 30% higher than M4’s. The configuration and bandwidth figures come from Apple’s October 2025 announcement: Apple’s M5 announcement.
How much faster is M5?
Apple published several comparisons, but they measure different workloads and use different baselines. Read each figure as a company-reported result for the stated comparison, not as a universal speed multiplier.

For its launch comparisons, Apple said it used select industry-standard benchmarks in September 2025. Its test systems were a preproduction 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5, a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU; a production 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4, also with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU; and a production 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU. Apple said the results reflect approximate MacBook Pro performance. The figures therefore should not be read as a direct guarantee for every M5 device or software workload. What do Apple’s AI examples show?
Apple’s developer presentation gives workload-specific examples beyond the headline peak-compute comparison. It described image generation in Draw Things on an M5 iPad Pro as up to four times faster than M4 for selected diffusion models. For Topaz video enhancement on an M5 MacBook Pro, Apple presented a result up to 7.7 times faster than M1. For large language models, it said time to first token was up to four times faster and token generation up to 25% faster.

These examples are tied to the named software, device and workload conditions; they should not be generalized to other models, applications or systems. Apple’s presentation is available in its M5 and A19 GPU machine-learning talk.
Which devices use the M5 chip?
At the October 2025 launch, Apple introduced M5 in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and Apple Vision Pro. Apple Support’s later technical specifications also list M5 in the 13-inch MacBook Air. For that Air, Apple lists a 10-core CPU, an 8-core or 10-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine and 153GB/s memory bandwidth; memory and storage options depend on configuration. M5 is integrated into its host device, not a standalone consumer upgrade. When comparing M5 products, consider the device’s GPU-core configuration, memory capacity, form factor and the specific workload that matters to you; the chip name alone does not describe the entire configuration.

No: as of October 4, 2026, M6 is Apple’s later base-chip generation. Apple also announced M5 Pro and M5 Max on March 3, 2026, and M5 Ultra alongside M6 on August 25, 2026. M5 remains relevant when evaluating devices that use the original chip, but it should not be described as Apple’s newest base chip. How to interpret the launch claims
- Match the metric to your task. AI peak compute, ray-traced graphics, general graphics and multithreaded CPU results are different measures.
- Check the baseline. A comparison with M1 is not interchangeable with one against M4.
- Check the device and configuration. Apple’s principal comparison used specified MacBook Pro systems, while its developer examples involved an iPad Pro and different software workloads.
- Treat the numbers as Apple claims. The cited performance figures come from Apple’s announcement and developer presentation; they are not independent third-party benchmark findings.
