Google’s Material 3 Expressive refresh brings more personalized colors, motion and responsive interface elements to Android, while Wear OS adapts the same design approach to the round watch screen. Google announced the changes on May 13, 2025, describing Android 16 as the foundation for the phone-side design and Wear OS 6 as the smartwatch platform update. The announcement outlined plans and earlier rollout expectations; it is not a current list of eligible devices.
What Material 3 Expressive changes
Material 3 Expressive is a design system, not a separate phone or watch product. Google presents it as an extension of Material You’s personalization, with more fluid interactions and information that is easier to scan. In announcing the redesign, Google’s VP of Product Management and User Experiences for Android Platform, Mindy Brooks, said: “Personalization is core to Android, and Material 3 Expressive — one of our biggest updates in years — is all about making your device feel unique to you.” (Google, May 13, 2025)
The broad idea spans both platforms, but the details differ: Android refreshes familiar phone and tablet surfaces, while Wear OS reshapes controls and motion for a small circular display.
| Design area | Android | Wear OS |
|---|---|---|
| Screen and layout | Phone and tablet surfaces, including notifications and Quick Settings. | Components and scrolling shaped for a round watch display. |
| Personalization | Updated dynamic color themes and emphasized typography. | Watch-face colors can carry through the system, apps and tiles. |
| Motion and glanceability | Responsive shade and notification interactions, plus Live Updates for supported apps. | Edge-following scrolling, shape changes and quick-access tiles and buttons. |
What changes on Android
Google described Android 16 as laying the foundation for Material 3 Expressive, with further design updates planned for Pixel devices. Its examples focus on familiar interactions rather than a wholly new way to use a phone.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- More expressive motion: Spring-like animations can make everyday actions feel more responsive. Google showed notifications reacting to a dismissal gesture.
- A refreshed notification shade: The shade can use a subtly blurred background, and notification prioritization is among the planned refinements.
- Updated personalization: Dynamic color themes and emphasized typography give system surfaces a more distinct look.
- Customizable Quick Settings: Users can tailor the Quick Settings area rather than treating it as a fixed set of controls.
- Live Updates: Progress for activities such as food delivery can appear in a persistent, easy-to-check format. Google’s Android 16 feature post said Live Updates were starting with compatible rideshare and food-delivery apps; availability depends on app support. (Google, “Android 16: Productivity, security and more features on Android”; Google, “Android 16 is here”)
Android 16 also includes platform features such as hearing-device controls, security changes and tablet windowing. Those are part of the broader Android release, not all Material 3 Expressive design changes.
How Wear OS uses the round screen
On Wear OS, the refresh is designed around the circular canvas instead of simply shrinking a phone interface. Google highlighted scrolling animations that trace the display’s curve, depth effects in lists and controls that use the screen edge. Buttons can hug the edge, and components can morph shape as the interface changes state.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Scrolling follows the curve: Lists can move in a way that echoes the round screen, helping content feel native to the watch rather than clipped into a rectangle.
- Controls make better use of the edge: Edge-hugging buttons can make more of the limited display useful while keeping controls accessible.
- Shape and color add personality: Shape-morphing transitions and dynamic color drawn from the watch face can carry a consistent theme across the system.
- Watch tasks stay glanceable: Refreshed PIN and media controls, along with tiles for actions such as texting a contact or starting a workout, are intended to make common tasks easier to reach.
Google’s developer guidance describes tools and patterns that app makers can use, including TransformingLazyColumn for edge-following scroll motion, a ScrollIndicator, three-slot tile layouts, variable fonts, dynamic color and spring or shape-morphing animations. These are implementation options for developers, not a promise that every feature will appear in every watch app. (Android Developers Blog, “What’s new in Wear OS 6”; Android Developers Blog, “Designing with personality: Introducing Material 3 Expressive for Wear OS”)
What Google’s rollout announcements establish
Google’s May 2025 announcement said Pixel devices would try the updates first later that year, and its platform materials associated the phone-side foundation with Android 16 and the watch design with Wear OS 6. Those were historical plans, not proof that a particular phone or watch has received the redesign today. The cited announcements do not provide a complete, current, device-by-device eligibility list. Check Google’s and your device maker’s latest rollout information for your exact model before assuming availability or buying hardware for this design. Google’s Wear OS battery claim
Google reported up to 10% more battery life for watches moving from Wear OS 5 to Wear OS 6. This is a vendor-reported maximum, not a guaranteed result: Google’s developer article says actual battery performance varies. (Android Developers Blog, “What’s new in Wear OS 6”)
