Sometimes—but opening a Visio file is not the same as preserving it perfectly. Diagrams.net explicitly supports importing VSDX files, while warning that imported diagrams may render differently; LibreOffice Draw may also open several Visio formats, but the available format guide is old. For a diagram that must remain editable, test a copy in the app you plan to use and compare it with the original before converting or sharing it.
Which free Visio alternatives can open Visio files?
| Option | Visio formats documented | Compatibility caveat | Cost and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| diagrams.net | VSDX import is documented. | Its documentation warns that diagrams may render differently, and embedded EMF images in VSDX diagrams are not imported. | Available as a free diagramming option. |
| LibreOffice Draw | A LibreOffice 5.1-era guide lists VDX, VSD, VSDM, and VSDX as formats Draw can open. | The format guide is old and does not establish faithful conversion. Check the current version with a representative file. | LibreOffice is a free office suite. |
| Visio for the web | VSDX is supported; VSD is not. | Microsoft says some complex diagrams created in Visio desktop may not open. | Microsoft describes web Visio availability for Microsoft 365 business subscribers; it is not a universally free standalone alternative. |

What can change when you import a VSDX file?
Visio and diagrams.net use different file models and rendering environments, so an imported diagram can look different even when the import succeeds. Diagrams.net specifically notes that embedded EMF images in VSDX diagrams are not imported. That limitation can leave a diagram incomplete if an embedded image is important to its meaning.
For any candidate app, compare the opened copy with the original. Check text and wrapping, fonts, embedded images, shape and connector placement, page layout, and interactive behavior such as links or other diagram-specific elements. These are sensible inspection points, not a guarantee that every listed feature will fail.

How to convert a Visio diagram without risking the original
- Keep the source unchanged. Make a separate copy of the VSD or VSDX file before importing or converting it.
- Choose a candidate based on the extension. For VSDX, diagrams.net has documented import support. For older VSD files or a complex diagram, note that Visio for the web does not support VSD and may not open some complex desktop diagrams. LibreOffice Draw is another candidate, but verify current-version behavior rather than relying on its older format guide.
- Open the copy and inspect the result. Compare it with the original at the same zoom and page size. Check the text, images, shapes, connectors, and any behavior collaborators depend on.
- Save a converted file only after review. Confirm that the recipient can open the chosen editable format, and retain the original Visio file as a fallback.
- Use a fixed-view export if editing is unnecessary. Diagrams.net documents PNG, SVG, and PDF export options. An export is useful for viewing, but it does not preserve full editability; keep a native editable copy separately.
When is a free alternative good enough?
- For a simple diagram that needs minor edits: a trial import may be sufficient if the text, layout, and visual elements survive inspection.
- For a complex or business-critical diagram: do not assume that a successful open means faithful conversion. Test representative files individually and keep the original available.
- For read-only sharing: provide a PDF or image export when the recipient only needs to view the diagram, and keep an editable source file for future changes.
No universal lossless conversion is established by the format documentation. Compatibility depends on the file and on what the recipient needs to preserve, so test before migrating a collection of diagrams.
