Some personal Google Accounts can change their Gmail address without losing the account or its data, but the option is not available to everyone. Check Personal info > Email > Google Account email in your Google Account settings. If you see Change Google Account email, you can try choosing an available @gmail.com address; if you do not, Google says the change may not be possible for your account.
First, know what you are changing
Your Gmail address is the part before @gmail.com plus the domain; it is different from the sender name recipients see in their inbox. Google now allows some personal-account users to change the Google Account email ending in gmail.com to another available Gmail address. It is an account-specific option, not a universal Gmail setting. Google’s account-email instructions say an eligible user can change to another address ending in @gmail.com.
This is different from adding an alternate email address for contact or sign-in, changing only your display name, or creating a separate Google Account. Only changing the Google Account email can replace the address on the existing account while keeping that account’s data together.
Check whether your account has the change option
- On a computer, sign in to the Google Account you want to update.
- Open Personal info.
- Select Email, then Google Account email.
- Look for Change Google Account email. If it appears, follow the on-screen steps to choose an available Gmail username.
The new address cannot already be in use or be an address that was previously used and deleted. If the change control is absent, Google says it might not be possible to change the email for that account; its eligibility guidance does not present the missing option as a password problem or a setting you can force on.

What happens to your old address and account data
Google says your former Gmail address remains associated with the account as an alternate address. Messages sent to either the old or new address arrive in the same Gmail inbox, and account data such as photos, messages, and email is not affected. You can switch back to the previous address. Google limits creation of a new Gmail address on the account to once every 12 months and three times total; the new address cannot be deleted. These are Google’s stated product rules in its account-email help.
The change does not rewrite every old reference. For example, earlier Calendar events may still show the former address. Google’s guidance on changing your account email explains what stays associated with the account.

Prepare for linked services and older devices
Before making the change, review Google’s cautions if you use a Chromebook, Sign in with Google on third-party websites, or Chrome Remote Desktop. Google recommends backing up data as a precaution and notes that some app settings may reset. Its account-email troubleshooting guidance describes cases where older content or connected services may still identify the old address; you may also need to resubscribe to some email subscriptions.
- Make a backup before changing the address, following Google’s advice.
- Afterward, test sign-in to important third-party accounts and check services that use Google sign-in.
- If an app, device, or older item still uses the old address, consult Google’s troubleshooting guidance and update the service directly where needed.
If you cannot change the address
If the setting is unavailable, you can still use an alternate email for sign-in or contact purposes, or create a separate Google Account and plan a careful migration. A separate account is not a rename: account data and service connections do not automatically become part of the new account. Work or school Google Accounts and other organization-managed accounts are controlled by the organization; ask the administrator about changing the address. Deleting Gmail is not a workaround for renaming. Google says deleting the Gmail service removes messages and settings after 30 days, and you need a non-Gmail alternate address to continue using other Google services. That is a separate, consequential action, not a way to preserve the same Gmail account under a new address. See Google’s account-email help and Gmail deletion guidance.

You can change the display name recipients see without changing your email address. In Gmail on the web, open Settings > See all settings > Accounts and Import (or Accounts), find Send mail as, and select Edit info. This changes the sender name, not the address itself. To change the account email, use the separate Google Account setting described above. Google’s Gmail instructions for changing your sender name cover the display-name setting.
