You cannot prove a game mod is safe just because it is popular, appears on a familiar platform, or passes an antivirus scan. Reduce the risk by checking the source, creator, game version, permissions, scripts, and game rules before installing. If a download asks you to disable antivirus, comes from an unexpected message, or requests access that does not fit its purpose, do not run it.
Start with the source and creator
Look for the mod in the game’s official mod manager, if it has one, or on a recognized project or creator page. Check that the page and creator appear legitimate, and reach the page directly rather than following an unexpected link in a message or post. The Australian Cyber Security Centre advises: “Only use games, applications and mods that you know are legitimate.” Its online gaming security tips also recommend checking legitimacy before downloading.
Platform moderation and a creator’s reputation can lower uncertainty, but neither certifies a file. Valve’s advice is to “only download custom content from trusted sources,” while also warning users to use caution with modifications such as scripts and custom skins. A trusted listing is a starting point, not a guarantee that every file is safe.
Check that the mod fits your game and how you plan to play
Confirm the supported game version
Read the mod’s description and confirm the game version it supports. Compatibility details differ by game. For example, KRAFTON’s PUBG Mods Policy requires mods to identify the game version current when they were created. A mismatch may cause crashes or unexpected behavior even when there is no evidence of malicious intent.

Read the rules for online play
Check the specific game’s and service’s rules before enabling a mod online. A mod that is acceptable in an offline or single-player context may be prohibited in multiplayer. Steam warns that third-party modifications designed to give an advantage on VAC-secured servers can trigger a VAC ban; see Valve’s VAC guidance. That warning concerns VAC-secured servers, not every mod or every game. Other games set their own policies, so do not assume that permission on one platform carries over to another.
Watch for suspicious instructions and permissions
Stop if installation instructions tell you to turn off antivirus or install unrelated software. Be wary of requests for permissions that do not make sense for the mod’s stated purpose. The Australian Cyber Security Centre specifically advises against software that recommends disabling antivirus and against software with excessive or suspicious permissions.

Some mods legitimately need access to game files or other resources, depending on how they work. The key question is whether the access requested is explained and proportionate. If you cannot tell why a permission is needed, do not grant it just to get the mod running.
Take extra care with mods that contain scripts
Scripts can make an asset interactive, but they can also do more than its visible purpose suggests. Roblox warns that third-party Creator Store assets can contain malicious backdoor scripts, and that popularity alone does not guarantee safety. Its advice about sandboxing assets and carefully limiting capabilities applies to Roblox creator assets and its controls; other games may not provide equivalent safeguards.

If the platform exposes a script, inspect what it does or ask someone knowledgeable to review it. Unusually complex or obfuscated code deserves scrutiny, but a novice review cannot certify that code is safe. Where the platform provides sandboxing or capability controls, restrict the asset to what it needs rather than granting broad access.
Scan the download, but do not treat the result as a verdict
Keep security software enabled and scan downloaded files with up-to-date protection. A clean scan is not proof that a file is safe: detection depends on what the security software recognizes, and a scan cannot establish that the mod will behave properly or comply with game rules.

Take a detection seriously rather than assuming it is a false positive. Steam Support notes that false positives can occur, but malware protection should still be treated seriously. If you are unsure about an alert, consult your antivirus provider’s guidance; do not run the file merely because the mod page or another user says the warning is harmless.

Make a copy of your saves before installing a mod, especially if installation instructions involve replacing or editing files. The Australian Cyber Security Centre lists a USB stick, memory card, external hard drive, or cloud storage as backup options. A backup helps you recover your progress if a mod damages or makes saves incompatible; it does not detect malware or make an unsafe download safe.

Use this go/no-go checklist
- Source: You found the mod through an official manager or a creator or project page you can verify.
- Compatibility: The listing identifies a game version that matches yours.
- Rules: The game permits the mod for the online or offline use you intend.
- Requests: It does not ask you to disable protection, install unrelated software, or grant unexplained permissions.
- Scripts: You can inspect them or limit their capabilities where the platform allows it, and you are not treating popularity as proof.
- Protection and recovery: Security software remains on, and you have backed up your saves.
If an important check fails or you cannot resolve a concern, do not install the mod. Ask the author through the project’s official page or consult the game or platform’s support guidance. No cross-game prevalence figure is established by the cited official guidance, so there is no sound basis here for assigning a percentage of mods as safe or malicious. KRAFTON’s PUBG Mods Policy states that the company “makes no guarantees regarding their security, functionality, or compatibility” of unofficial third-party tools used to create mods; that statement is specific to its policy and reinforces why a platform listing should not be treated as a warranty.
