What happens depends on what actually stopped: the project team, an exchange listing, a service, or the blockchain network itself. Your custody arrangement, transfer options, liquidity, and any migration deadlines determine what you can do next.
What “shut down” can mean
The phrase can describe several different events. A team may stop developing a token while its blockchain continues to process transactions. An exchange may delist the token but leave withdrawals open for a limited time. A website or product may close while tokens remain on-chain. Or the network itself may stop functioning, preventing transfers regardless of whether a wallet still displays a balance.
Start by identifying what the official notice says has stopped, and verify the specific token and network. A ticker symbol alone is not enough to establish that two assets or networks are compatible.
Do you lose your crypto if it gets delisted?
A delisting is an exchange decision, not necessarily the destruction of tokens on the blockchain. Binance says, in its explanation of its own process, that assets are not lost simply because a token is delisted; it also says users generally receive advance notice and a withdrawal grace period. Those statements do not guarantee that a particular asset can still be withdrawn, traded, or recovered after its network or project fails. Binance’s delisting FAQ distinguishes delisting a token from removing an individual trading pair and describes its stated procedures.

Exchange functions can end on different dates. Trading might stop before deposits or withdrawals; an exchange may later convert or liquidate balances under its own process. Read the notice for the exact asset, network, account region, and cutoff. Do not assume that a balance shown in an account is still transferable.
Can you withdraw a delisted coin?
Possibly, if the exchange still supports withdrawals and the network can process the transaction. The exchange’s asset-specific notice controls the available dates and steps. Kraken’s scheduled-delisting notice for May 2026, for example, listed trading and deposits ending May 29, withdrawals through August 27, and liquidation of remaining balances September 1–5. Kraken warned that thin or inactive markets could mean very low or no proceeds. These dates apply to that notice, not as a general Kraken or industry-wide schedule. After withdrawal support closes, you may have no way to move an exchange-held balance yourself. Even while withdrawals remain open, a network outage can prevent transactions. Kraken’s STEP notice warned that it might be unable to liquidate or recover remaining balances if the STEP network went offline, potentially before the dates in that notice. Kraken’s STEP notice is a project-specific warning, not a prediction about every delisted token.
What happens if the blockchain shuts down?
If a blockchain stops processing transactions, tokens on that network may become impossible to transfer, even if a wallet continues to display them. A wallet stores or manages access information; it cannot make a nonfunctional network validate a transaction. An exchange may also be unable to withdraw, liquidate, or recover assets that depend on that network.

This is different from a project team ceasing operations while the network continues to run. In that case, transfers might still work, but development, support, liquidity, or the token’s practical uses could decline. Whether any market remains is a separate question from whether the token still exists on-chain.
Do you have to migrate your token before a deadline?
Sometimes. A migration replaces or moves a token to a different contract or network. The project or exchange may require a compatible wallet, set a deadline, limit support by region, or decline to convert automatically. Coinbase’s guidance says users may need to move assets manually to a compatible self-custody wallet; its live migration page lists asset-specific timelines for migration, sending and receiving, and trading. It also says it will not automatically convert ACX as the project winds down that token. - Find the official instructions. Use the project’s announcement and the exchange’s notice, not an unsolicited message or a search result that merely repeats them.
- Confirm the exact asset and network. Check the token contract and destination network against the official instructions. Matching tickers do not prove compatibility.
- Check who must act and by when. Confirm whether the exchange converts automatically, whether you must withdraw or migrate manually, and whether a deadline or regional restriction applies.
- Verify the destination supports the token. A wallet must support the exact network and asset; sending to a wallet that supports a similarly named token on another chain can fail to achieve the migration.
- Follow the specified process before the cutoff. Do not send funds to an address supplied through an unofficial channel. If anything in the instructions conflicts, pause and confirm it through the project or exchange’s official support route.
How custody and staking change the outcome
Exchange custody
If the tokens are held by an exchange, that platform’s deadlines and supported actions determine whether you can trade, withdraw, or receive a conversion. Save relevant notices and account statements so you have a record of the balance and the platform’s instructions.
Self-custody
With a self-custody wallet, a delisting alone does not necessarily remove the token from the network. You still need the network to function and a compatible destination if you want to transfer or migrate the asset. Self-custody does not guarantee that the token has value or that a buyer will be available.

Staking, lending, or an intermediary
Tokens held through a staking or lending service may be subject to that provider’s withdrawal, redemption, and processing terms as well as the project’s status. Staked tokens can have unbonding periods; an intermediary may add administrative delays. An SEC-hosted memorandum dated April 17, 2025 discusses the possibility that a beneficial owner could lose access if a delegee enters insolvency or bankruptcy proceedings. It does not establish that all staked assets are lost or that self-custody guarantees recovery. Read the SEC-hosted memorandum.
What to check when you receive a shutdown notice
- Identify whether the announcement concerns the team, product, token, exchange listing, migration, or blockchain network.
- Check the exact trading, deposit, withdrawal, conversion, and migration deadlines; they may differ.
- Confirm the token contract and network using official project and exchange information.
- If you are using a third party, check its unstaking, unbonding, redemption, and withdrawal terms.
- Treat a quoted price cautiously if trading is inactive, liquidity is thin, or withdrawals have stopped. A visible price does not ensure an executable sale or meaningful proceeds.
- Keep transaction records and official notices. If insolvency or a legal claim is involved, possible recovery depends on the specific entity, custody terms, jurisdiction, and proceeding; there is no universal outcome established here.
How exchange policies differ
Exchange procedures are platform- and asset-specific, not universal guarantees. Binance says it generally gives advance notice and a withdrawal grace period, and that it may convert some tokens into stablecoins after withdrawals close, with a separate notification. Kraken’s May 2026 notice used separate dates for stopping trading and deposits, ending withdrawals, and liquidating remaining balances. Coinbase’s migration guidance distinguishes migrations from delistings and shows that support and timelines can differ by asset. Always consult the current notice for your account and token rather than relying on another asset’s example.
