Auto Blocker and Modes and Routines are useful options when they fit your needs, while Smart Switch is there if you want to move data from an old device. Galaxy menus and features vary by model and software version, so treat the paths below as starting points rather than universal instructions.
1. Set up secure access
During the setup wizard, choose a screen lock—a PIN, pattern, or password you can reliably remember. Biometrics can make unlocking more convenient where available, but set a lock method you can use if biometric unlocking is unavailable. Samsung identifies screen locking as a way to restrict entry and protect device data. Samsung’s security and privacy guidance covers screen locks and other device protections.
2. Review privacy, permissions, and Auto Blocker
Check app permissions and privacy controls
Open Settings > Security and privacy and review the controls shown on your phone. Pay particular attention to which apps can use location, the camera, and the microphone. Samsung also identifies controls for advertising personalization, activity controls, and diagnostics; choose these according to your privacy preferences rather than assuming that every optional data setting is a security threat. Decide whether Auto Blocker fits your app-install habits
Samsung says Auto Blocker can block installation from unauthorized sources and suspicious activity. It may be offered during initial setup, and can also be found later under Settings > Security and privacy on supported devices. If you install apps only through approved stores, keeping this protection enabled may suit you. If you deliberately install software from other sources, check what the setting blocks on your model before changing it. Its availability and behavior depend on the device and software version. Samsung’s Auto Blocker support page provides more detail.

3. Tune the settings you use every day
There is no single best brightness, timeout, sound, or notification setup for everyone. Use these areas as a short checklist, and change only what would make your phone more comfortable or less distracting:
- Display: Adjust brightness and screen timeout to your preferences.
- Notifications: Decide which apps are allowed to interrupt you and how their alerts appear.
- Sound: Set the alert and volume behavior you want for calls and notifications.
- Personalization: Explore wallpaper and other appearance options if you want to make the phone feel like yours.
- Find your phone: Learn the device’s locate-phone option before you need it.
- Other tools: Explore Secure Folder, storage controls, and app downloads if they address a need you have.
Samsung’s Galaxy A-series setup guide highlights these areas, but its instructions are model-specific; the exact controls and labels can differ across Galaxy phones.

4. Use Modes and Routines for repeated tasks
Modes and Routines can run actions when selected conditions are met. For example, you could set a bedtime routine to lower screen brightness, or configure a workday routine to mute notifications and turn on Wi-Fi. Start with one recurring task you want to automate; a custom routine is only worthwhile if its trigger and actions save you effort.
On Android 14 and 13, Samsung’s UK guide places routines under Settings > Modes and Routines. On Android 12 and 11, it points to the Bixby Routines app. Paths and layouts also vary by device, software, and app version. If the path does not match your phone, search Settings for “Modes and Routines.” Check Samsung’s guide to Bixby Routines for version-specific guidance.

5. Transfer data only if you need to
Smart Switch can move data from a previous phone during Galaxy setup, with wireless and wired transfer options. Choose the method that suits your devices. A cable is not required for wireless transfer; for a wired transfer, the cable and connectors must support the connection between both phones. Check Samsung’s Smart Switch transfer instructions for the available steps.

Samsung says battery consumption may run higher during the first few days as apps and services are optimized, then normalize. Avoid treating early drain alone as proof that a setting or battery is faulty. If unusually high consumption persists beyond that initial period, use troubleshooting guidance for your specific model rather than assuming the issue will resolve on its own. Samsung’s battery guidance explains the initial optimization period.

How to prioritize the setup
