Start with recent bank and card statements, then identify who bills each recurring charge and cancel through that company or its billing platform. Check Apple, Google Play, Google Payments, PayPal and your email receipts—but no single dashboard is guaranteed to show every subscription. Save each cancellation confirmation and check later statements for another charge.
1. Find recurring charges in your statements and receipts
Review several recent months of bank and credit-card statements. Look for charges that repeat under the same or a similar merchant name, even if the amount or billing interval varies. Statements can reveal subscriptions that do not appear in app-store dashboards; there is no particular review period that guarantees you will find every recurring charge.
Search your email for purchase receipts, renewal notices and subscription confirmations. If you cannot identify an Apple subscription, Apple recommends checking your statement for the billing company and searching email for phrases such as “receipt from Apple” or “invoice from Apple.” Use the account named on the receipt to determine where to manage it: Apple’s instructions for finding and canceling subscriptions.
Make a short list of the merchant name as it appears on the statement, the charge amount and date, and any account or receipt that helps identify it. Also check direct merchant accounts, other payment wallets and household members’ billing accounts when relevant. Platform lists are limited to subscriptions associated with the account or billing route you checked.

2. Check the account that may be managing the subscription
Apple Account
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap your name, then tap Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription to review or cancel it.
If the subscription is missing, Apple says it may belong to another Apple Account or be billed by a different company. Check other Apple Accounts you use and follow the billing company shown on your statement or receipt. If the subscription page has no Cancel button or shows an expiration message in red, Apple says it is already canceled.
Google Play
Open subscription management in Google Play while signed in to the Google Account that may have purchased the subscription. If it does not appear, switch to other Google Accounts and check again. Some installment payment plans cannot be stopped mid-plan; turning off renewal can prevent the next renewal without removing remaining installments.

Google Payments
Sign in to the relevant payments profile and open Subscriptions & services, then select Manage. Google explains how to find subscriptions and other recurring payments in Google Payments. If there is no cancellation option there, Google may direct you to the Google product or merchant that manages the subscription.
PayPal
In PayPal, go to Settings → Payments → Automatic payments, select the merchant and review its payment arrangement. PayPal’s automatic-payment instructions cover payments set up through PayPal. Turning off an automatic payment or removing PayPal as the payment method does not necessarily cancel the merchant’s subscription or contract. Confirm separately with the merchant that the service is closed.

3. Cancel with the company or service that bills you
Use the billing descriptor and receipt to choose the cancellation route. If Apple bills the subscription, cancel through Apple Account settings. If Google Play bills it, use Google Play. If a merchant bills you directly, use that merchant’s account or published customer-service contact. For a PayPal automatic payment, change the PayPal payment authorization and also verify cancellation with the merchant.
Do not assume that deleting an app, replacing a card, unlinking PayPal or blocking a debit ends the underlying subscription. Those actions can affect how a payment is made without ending the service agreement or any remaining obligation.

4. Treat payment authorization and service cancellation as separate tasks
For a recurring debit from a US bank account, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises contacting the company to revoke authorization and notifying your bank or credit union. You may also ask the bank about a stop-payment order; a fee may apply. Follow the CFPB’s guidance on stopping automatic payments from a bank account.
Stopping the payment route does not, by itself, cancel a contract or erase an amount you still owe. Contact the merchant to end the service and resolve any remaining obligation directly. If you continue seeing charges after cancellation, contact the merchant and ask your card issuer or bank about disputing them.

5. Keep proof and check what happens next
- Save the dated cancellation confirmation, such as an email, screenshot or chat record.
- If you cancel by phone or chat, note the date, the representative’s name if available, and what was agreed.
- Check later statements for another charge from the same merchant.
- If billing continues after cancellation, contact the merchant and dispute the charge with your card issuer or bank as appropriate.
The FTC recommends keeping cancellation records, monitoring statements and disputing charges that continue after cancellation. If you discover a subscription charge you did not authorize, you can also report it to the FTC. For a free trial, a calendar reminder before its deadline can help you decide whether to keep it and avoid an unwanted renewal. A notebook or budget planner can hold merchant names, renewal dates, cancellation confirmations and follow-up dates; it will not find charges automatically.
What to know about the federal click-to-cancel rule
The FTC announced a federal click-to-cancel rule in October 2024. The Associated Press reported on July 11, 2025 that a federal appeals court vacated it. Do not assume that this rule currently guarantees a cancellation method as easy as signup. That status is based here on AP’s July 2025 report; it does not establish what separate state rules may apply.
Where the steps may differ
The account paths and consumer-protection guidance here are primarily for US consumers. Bank procedures, dispute rights and subscription laws vary by location. Apple, Google and PayPal may also change their interface labels, so follow the current instructions in the relevant account if a menu has moved.
