Bayesian dating combines DNA evidence about evolutionary change with fossil evidence about geological time. A molecular-clock model links the two, and Bayesian inference produces a probability distribution of possible divergence dates—not a single date known with certainty. Without a fossil or other external time calibration, DNA alone cannot determine absolute ages.
How the evidence becomes a timeline
DNA sequences record substitutions that accumulated along the branches of an evolutionary tree. Their patterns help estimate relationships among sampled species and the relative amounts of change along branches, conditional on a model of sequence evolution. But substitutions are not a calendar: a long branch could reflect more elapsed time, a faster evolutionary rate, or both.
A molecular clock supplies the link between substitutions and elapsed time. A strict clock assumes a shared rate across lineages; a relaxed clock allows rates to vary among branches. Fossils provide the external time information needed to anchor parts of the tree. Bayesian inference combines the sequence-data likelihood with assumptions about the tree, clock rates, and fossil-based calibrations to estimate a posterior distribution of dates.
In simplified terms, the posterior is proportional to the likelihood of the observed data under a model multiplied by the prior assumptions. The likelihood asks how well a proposed tree, set of dates, and rates explain the DNA. The priors express which rates, tree histories, and fossil-compatible ages are considered plausible before accounting for that DNA. The resulting dates therefore depend on both evidence and assumptions.

What fossils and DNA each contribute
DNA sequences
Sequence patterns inform relationships and relative evolutionary change, but interpretation depends on the sequence-evolution model and taxon sampling. Rates can vary among sites within sequences as well as among lineages, so a constant-rate clock may not fit a particular dataset.
Fossils
A fossil has a geological age and may provide evidence about the age of a lineage or clade. To use it, researchers must interpret its age and evolutionary placement. In node dating, fossil evidence is translated into a calibration distribution for an internal node. That distribution represents uncertainty: a soft bound, for example, allows some probability outside the stated range rather than treating uncertain limits as impossible.

Clock and tree models
The clock model describes how rates relate to time across branches. A branching-process prior describes plausible histories of splitting through time. These assumptions influence how dates are distributed across the tree, including how multiple fossil calibrations and ancestor–descendant age constraints interact.
Three ways to incorporate fossil evidence
| Approach | Where fossils enter | How placement is handled | How the fossil record is represented |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node dating | Fossil-informed age distributions are assigned to selected internal nodes. | The calibration node is specified in advance. | As calibration distributions, whose effects interact with the tree prior and other age constraints. |
| Fossilized birth-death dating | Fossils and living taxa are treated as samples from a shared macroevolutionary process. | Fossil sampling is represented within the process model rather than only through separate node-specific calibrations. | Through an explicit fossilized birth-death sampling process; expanded models can also estimate diversification and sampling patterns. |
| Total-evidence (fossil tip) dating | Fossils are included as dated tips alongside living taxa. | Fossil placement is inferred using morphological characters rather than fixed entirely by a preassigned calibration node. | Fossil ages and morphology enter the phylogenetic analysis together with molecular sequences from living taxa. |
These approaches address different modeling choices, not a simple ranking from best to worst. Node dating is built around selected fossil-informed node calibrations. Fossilized birth-death methods model fossil and living-taxon sampling as part of a shared process. Total-evidence dating can make uncertainty in fossil placement part of the inference by including fossil taxa and their morphological data.

Why dates remain uncertain
Fossil ages constrain the timeline probabilistically, and their effect depends on defensible age interpretation and placement. Calibration distributions do not act independently: their interaction with one another, the tree prior, and ancestor–descendant constraints shapes the effective joint time prior. A calibration that appears reasonable in isolation can therefore contribute to an unexpected overall prior on tree ages.
More DNA can sharpen estimates of sequence relationships or relative branch change, but it cannot remove uncertainty in fossil calibrations. Nor does a narrow posterior automatically mean the date is secure: a precise-looking result may still depend strongly on weak calibration evidence or restrictive model assumptions. The estimated ages should be read as conditional on the data, calibration choices, and clock and tree models used.

How to assess a Bayesian dating analysis
- Check fossil interpretation. Ask what the fossil establishes about geological age and which lineage or clade it can defensibly inform.
- Understand the calibration. Examine the distribution assigned to each node, including the reasoning for its shape and any soft bounds.
- Inspect the joint time prior. Evaluate the resulting prior across the whole tree, rather than assuming that individually chosen calibrations remain independent in combination.
- Assess clock assumptions. Consider whether a strict clock is plausible or whether lineage-specific rate variation calls for a relaxed-clock model; account for variation among sequence sites as well.
- Compare plausible modeling choices. Check how posterior ages respond to defensible alternatives for calibrations, clock assumptions, and the tree prior.
- Check computational reliability. A concrete analysis also requires suitable taxon sampling and data, model selection, and convergence diagnostics; conceptual guidance alone cannot establish a reliable result for a particular dataset.
What a divergence date means
A reported date is an estimate under a specified model, not a direct reading from either a genome or a fossil. Its posterior distribution communicates uncertainty conditional on the chosen data and assumptions. A useful interpretation therefore considers not only the central estimate or interval, but also the fossil evidence behind the calibrations and whether reasonable changes to the model materially shift the result.
