The images that appeared in January 2026 showed a speculative iPhone 18 Pro with its front camera in the upper-left corner. That was not an official image of the shipping phone. Apple’s September 2026 announcement confirms a redesigned Dynamic Island, but current reporting says the Pro’s rear cameras remain in a triangular arrangement on a broad camera plateau. The clearest changes are to the display interface and camera controls—not a wholesale rearrangement of the cameras.
What the early iPhone 18 images showed
On January 20, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported that Jon Prosser had shared 4K renders through Front Page Tech. The renders depicted the front camera at the upper-left corner and a shifted Dynamic Island interface. They showed a proposed design, not an Apple-confirmed device. Tom’s Guide’s report on the renders documented what the images depicted, but could not establish the final hardware.
The claim was disputed on the same day. A separate Tom’s Guide report described a social-media post from leaker Instant Digital rejecting the top-left punch-hole claim and distinguishing an under-display infrared sensor from a visible front-camera opening. The statement was machine-translated and reported secondhand, so it is best understood as evidence of disagreement among leakers—not proof of the final design.
A MacRumors rumor roundup published before launch recorded the changing claims: early reports suggested fully under-screen Face ID with a visible top-left camera, while later reports pointed to partially under-screen Face ID and a narrower Dynamic Island. Those were pre-launch rumors; Apple’s announcement and subsequent design reporting provide stronger evidence about the Pro models that were announced.

What Apple announced about the display
Apple’s September 2026 announcement says, “Using advanced display technology, the Dynamic Island is redesigned to create room for additional information.” Apple says the feature can display up to three Live Activities at once and continues to enable Face ID. MacRumors reports that the Dynamic Island is smaller and that the infrared dot camera has moved beneath the display. It lists a 6.3-inch display for iPhone 18 Pro and a 6.9-inch display for iPhone 18 Pro Max, and says the overall design remains aligned with iPhone 17 Pro. Did the rear camera layout change?
Current MacRumors reporting describes three rear cameras arranged in a triangle on a camera plateau spanning much of the upper back. It does not describe a newly rearranged camera array. The dramatic camera-layout claim in the title’s early imagery therefore needs qualification: the supported changes are primarily about camera capability and controls, not a verified relocation of the rear lenses.
What changed in the camera experience
Apple’s announcement describes a variable-aperture main camera and a new Pro Controls experience. Apple says users can manually adjust aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, and use a histogram to check exposure. How to read the images against the announced Pro models
When comparing a leaked image or render with the announced phone, separate four questions:
- Front: Is the visible camera shown at the upper left, or is the image depicting a Dynamic Island? The top-left placement came from a speculative render.
- Display: Apple confirms a redesigned Dynamic Island for additional information, with up to three Live Activities. This is the clearest officially announced front-design change.
- Rear: Current reporting describes the familiar three-camera triangle on a broad upper-back plateau, not a confirmed new camera arrangement.
- Camera operation: Apple announces variable aperture and manual Pro Controls, including exposure-related settings and a histogram. These functional updates should not be confused with lens placement.
The evidence here concerns iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It does not establish that every non-Pro iPhone 18 model shares the same display or camera details.
