Phison advertises controller-solution peaks of up to 10,800 MB/s sequential read and write, but finished-drive speeds depend on the SSD’s NAND, firmware, design, and operating conditions. E31T-based retail products such as the MSI SPATIUM M560 provide more specific, model-level ratings. The controller’s arrival shows a growing Gen 5 drive ecosystem; it does not establish that Gen 5 SSDs have become mainstream across the market.
What is the Phison E31T SSD controller?
The PS5031-E31T is a controller chip for PCIe Gen 5 NVMe solid-state drives, not a complete SSD. A finished drive combines a controller with NAND flash, firmware, a circuit board, and a thermal solution. Those choices affect retail performance and features, so a controller’s advertised maximums are not guarantees for every drive that uses it.
Phison positions the E31T as a four-channel, DRAM-less PCIe Gen 5 x4 controller for mainstream client systems. Its product materials describe a 7nm implementation using TSMC process technology and list support for TLC or QLC NAND, capacities up to 8TB, M.2 2280 designs, and hardware security options. These are Phison platform claims; check an individual SSD’s specifications to confirm which features it implements.
In its CES 2024 announcement, Phison product marketing executive Michael Wu said the controller would bring “10GB/s performance without additional heatsinks and cooling requirements.” That is Phison’s launch claim, not independent evidence that every E31T drive can run without added cooling.

How fast is an E31T SSD?
Phison’s 2025 brochure rates the E31T controller solution at up to 10,800 MB/s for sequential reads and writes, and up to 1.5 million IOPS for random reads and writes. These are vendor-published maximums, not independently measured results or a promise of sustained performance from any retail drive. Retail specifications illustrate why the finished model matters. MSI lists the E31T in its SPATIUM M560 and publishes different maximum sequential ratings for its two capacities:

These are MSI’s specifications, not independent review results. MSI says its performance and power results were tested with the drive installed as a secondary SSD on the test system listed in its SPATIUM M560 specifications. MSI also lists maximum operating power of 5.9W and a five-year limited warranty subject to its stated TBW terms.
For a buying decision, compare the exact drive and capacity rather than relying on the controller name. Useful factors include price, sequential and random workload ratings, behavior during sustained writes after any cache is exhausted, power and thermal behavior, endurance, and warranty. The specifications cited here do not establish how the M560 performs in sustained-write testing or how it compares under controlled conditions with other Gen 5 drives.

Is the E31T DRAM-less?
Yes. Phison describes the E31T as a DRAM-less controller. That identifies the controller design; it does not by itself describe every aspect of a finished SSD’s firmware, performance under a particular workload, or feature set. Evaluate the complete drive’s specifications and independent testing where available.
Which SSDs use the Phison E31T?
MSI SPATIUM M560
MSI specifies the E31T controller in the SPATIUM M560, an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 5 x4 NVMe 2.0 drive offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities. MSI lists 3D NAND and the capacity-specific performance, endurance, power, and warranty figures above.

Crucial P510
Phison’s CES 2025 announcement identifies the Crucial P510 as E31T-based and says the E31T was qualified with Micron G9 NAND. That announcement does not provide a complete P510 specification table or independently tested results. Confirm current capacity, interface, ratings, and availability with Crucial before buying.
Phison also said in its CES 2025 material that E31T was qualified with Kioxia BiCS8 NAND, and its Computex 2025 announcement described the controller as designed for ultra-thin laptops and handheld gaming devices. These statements describe qualification and intended use, not guaranteed compatibility with every product in those categories.

Will a PCIe Gen 5 SSD work in your system?
Compatibility depends on the host device, not just the SSD controller. MSI describes the M560 as backward-compatible with earlier PCIe generations, but an older connection can limit the drive to the capabilities of that host. Check these details in your PC or device documentation before purchase:
- M.2 slot: Confirm that the device has an M.2 slot intended for NVMe storage, not merely a similarly shaped slot for another interface.
- PCIe generation and lanes: Check the slot’s PCIe generation and lane support. A Gen 5 x4 SSD needs a compatible host connection to reach Gen 5 x4 performance.
- Physical clearance: M.2 2280 describes the drive’s board dimensions, but does not prove it will fit a laptop or handheld. Check available length, thickness, and clearance around the slot.
- BIOS or firmware: Confirm that the system firmware supports the intended storage configuration and is current if the device maker requires an update.
- Cooling space: Check whether the device has a heatsink or other thermal provision and whether it can accommodate the drive’s cooling needs without obstructing nearby components.
Does an E31T drive need a heatsink?
There is no universal answer for every E31T-based SSD or host. Wu’s no-additional-cooling statement was Phison’s launch claim about the controller platform; the evidence does not establish that every retail drive can operate without a heatsink in every system. Follow the drive maker’s guidance and account for the host’s airflow, thermal design, and available clearance.
Has PCIe Gen 5 SSDs gone mainstream?
Phison called the E31T a mainstream platform in its CES 2024 launch material and later named retail implementations. That supports describing an E31T product ecosystem emerging by 2025. It does not establish broad market adoption: the cited sources provide no market-share, unit-sales, or adoption statistic for Gen 5 SSDs. “Mainstream” is Phison’s positioning, not a measured market conclusion.
