No GPU can mine Ethereum mainnet today. Ethereum switched from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake when The Merge was completed on September 15, 2022. This guide explains what that means for GPU miners, how to interpret old Ethereum GPU benchmarks, and what to measure if you are evaluating a different proof-of-work network.
Can you still mine Ethereum with a GPU?
No. Ethereum mainnet no longer produces blocks through GPU mining. The Merge replaced proof-of-work with proof-of-stake, so buying or tuning a graphics card cannot make it mine Ethereum mainnet. Ethereum.org records September 15, 2022 as the date The Merge was executed. Ethereum.org’s Merge overview also reports that the transition reduced Ethereum’s energy consumption by approximately 99.95%; that figure describes the network-level change, not GPU efficiency.
The Ethereum Foundation announced the planned transition on August 24, 2022, explaining that mining would end after The Merge. Its announcement described the planned Bellatrix and Paris upgrades; the completed date is recorded separately on Ethereum.org. Read the Foundation’s announcement.
What the old Ethereum GPU rankings measured
Ethereum mainnet used Ethash, a memory-hard proof-of-work algorithm. Ethereum.org now labels its Ethash documentation as historical interest because proof-of-work is switched off on Ethereum; it notes that Ethash remains in use on other proof-of-work networks. Those networks are distinct mining targets, and their GPU rankings or returns cannot be inferred from Ethereum-era comparisons. See Ethereum.org’s Ethash documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A historical GPU benchmark is useful only when its conditions are clear. Hashrate alone does not establish which card was best: power draw, memory capacity, miner software and configuration all affect what the result means. Geth’s historical documentation shows an Ethminer benchmark command, ethminer -M, and notes that benchmark output identifies the platform and device. It is an example for understanding an old test, not a way to mine Ethereum now. See Geth’s proof-of-work mining documentation.
- Hashrate: The measured work rate for the tested algorithm and configuration; it is not transferable to an unrelated algorithm.
- Power draw and efficiency: Record both the power measurement and its test method. A higher hashrate can come with higher power use, so compare work per watt rather than hashrate in isolation.
- Memory: Note capacity and configuration, since Ethash was memory-hard. Do not treat an old memory requirement as a current Ethereum mining requirement.
- Software and conditions: Identify the miner version, GPU model, driver, clock and power settings, operating environment, and whether the result came from a repeatable benchmark or a single run.
How to evaluate a GPU for another proof-of-work network
A GPU that was competitive for Ethereum is not automatically a good choice for another coin. Compare only results measured on the specific network’s algorithm, and check the network’s current mining rules and conditions independently. A useful comparison needs more than a hashrate chart:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Confirm the target network and algorithm, then use benchmarks made for that combination.
- Compare hashrate, measured power draw, and efficiency using equivalent test methods and configurations.
- Include GPU cost and your electricity rate when estimating operating economics; rewards and network conditions can change, so a benchmark is not a promise of profit.
- Verify the date, miner software version, and hardware configuration behind each published result before treating it as comparable.
There is no current Ethereum-mainnet GPU ranking to provide. A defensible ranking for another network requires current, network-specific test results and explicit assumptions about hardware cost, electricity, and rewards.

Proof-of-stake is not a different GPU-mining mode. After The Merge, Ethereum mainnet’s block production relies on validators under proof-of-stake rather than miners performing proof-of-work. A graphics card does not perform the role of an Ethereum validator simply because it once mined Ethash.
