What is included in Sonic Origins Plus?
SEGA’s Sonic Origins manual identifies four core games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The Nintendo US listing for Sonic Origins Plus also lists those games and says the Plus release includes 12 Game Gear titles. It adds playable Amy in the four main games and playable Knuckles in Sonic CD.
That breadth makes Origins Plus a practical starting point if you want to sample several foundational games in one purchase. It also includes additional modes and a Museum; not every mode is exclusive to the Plus edition. The official materials describe Story, Mission, Boss Rush, Mirror Mode, Museum content, and rankings.

How Origins changes the classic-game experience
Origins offers two presentation choices. According to SEGA’s manual and its mode descriptions, Anniversary Mode presents the games in widescreen (16:9) and gives players infinite attempts rather than Game Over/Continue. Coins can be used for certain retries and unlocks.
Classic Mode uses the original 4:3 presentation and rules, including limited tries and a time limit. Pick it if preserving those constraints matters more than a forgiving format; Anniversary Mode is the less punishing option. These mode differences apply to Origins and should not be mistaken for the distinction between Origins and Mania.

What Sonic Mania and Mania Plus offer
Sonic Mania is a separate 2D, high-speed action game rather than a bundle of the four Origins classics. Sonic Mania Plus is an expanded release of Mania, not a sequel or a four-game compilation. SEGA’s regional Mania page describes Plus as a physical release of the digital game with added content, including material related to Mighty and Ray.
That makes Mania the stronger match if what you want is one coherent classic-style adventure rather than access to several older games. The Plus label means something different here than it does in Origins: Mania Plus expands Mania, while Origins Plus expands a collection.

Which one should you play?
Choose Sonic Origins Plus if you want the historical games
- You want the four main classic games together, with the Game Gear titles also included in the Plus release.
- You want the option of playable Amy in the four main games and Knuckles in Sonic CD.
- You value a choice between Anniversary Mode’s widescreen and infinite attempts and Classic Mode’s original-style presentation and rules.
Choose Sonic Mania if you want one distinct adventure
- You want a separate game designed in a classic style, not a compilation of earlier releases.
- You prefer to focus on a single adventure rather than choose among a catalog of games.
- You are considering Mania Plus for its added content, while understanding that it remains an expanded release of Mania.
If you already own Sonic Origins
SEGA documents a Sonic Origins: Plus Expansion Pack for existing owners as an alternative route to Plus content. Compare that add-on’s current price and availability with buying Origins Plus; the official product information establishes that the add-on exists, but not which option currently costs less.

Availability and release format depend on region and platform. SEGA’s Japanese Origins Plus information lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store for that market, and says Xbox and PC are download-only there. Those details should not be treated as a universal platform or format list.
Rank #4
SEGA’s Japanese Mania Plus page lists PS4 and Switch in that market. Its regional Mania page describes Mania Plus as a physical release with additions, but does not establish a current platform or stock list for every region. Before paying, check the exact storefront listing for your country and platform, and confirm whether any physical edition requires a download for some content. Current prices and availability are not established by these product descriptions.
