1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can make a GIF look very similar in an MP4, but you cannot guarantee a mathematically lossless conversion with a typical H.264 encode. Keep the original dimensions and timing, use a high-quality setting, and compare the exported video with the GIF. The FFmpeg command below is a practical starting point; it is not a promise of identical output.
Convert a GIF to MP4 with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a local command-line option that lets you choose the video codec and quality setting. After installing FFmpeg, open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing your GIF and run:
ffmpeg -i input.gif -an -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart output.mp4
Replace input.gif and output.mp4 with your file names. The command encodes H.264 video, omits audio, selects a commonly supported pixel format, and moves MP4 playback metadata toward the beginning of the file for faster startup in many players.
-crf 18is a high-quality starting point, not a universal visual-quality guarantee. Lower CRF values generally prioritize quality and create larger files; higher values generally create smaller files with more compression.- The command does not request a resize, so FFmpeg should retain the source dimensions. Check the output dimensions if a destination has specific requirements.
- H.264 encoding is lossy. Compare the MP4 with the original, especially around small text, sharp edges, and smooth gradients.
If FFmpeg reports that dimensions must be even
Some H.264 workflows require even width and height. If the GIF has an odd dimension, you can use a scale filter that rounds each dimension down to an even number:

ffmpeg -i input.gif -an -vf "scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart output.mp4
This can change a dimension by one pixel. Inspect the result to ensure the image still fits the destination and does not appear cropped or distorted.
Will converting a GIF to MP4 reduce quality?
It can. GIF stores each frame using an indexed palette of up to 256 colors, and H.264 applies its own lossy compression when making the MP4. The format change is a transcode, not a lossless change of container. A carefully chosen encode can look close to the GIF, but fine detail, text, edges, or gradients may look different.

Preserve the source dimensions and frame timing where possible. Adobe’s Media Encoder guidance warns that changing frame rate from the source can introduce motion artifacts and that changing pixel aspect ratio can distort the image. Avoid resizing or changing timing unless the destination requires it.
How to keep the GIF’s timing and repetition
GIF frame delays are represented in hundredths of a second, and a GIF can specify a finite number of repeats or loop indefinitely. FFmpeg’s GIF demuxer defaults to ignoring the GIF’s loop instruction, so a conversion may produce just one pass. The MP4’s duration reflects the frames encoded; it does not automatically make the video repeat in every player or destination.

- If one pass is what you want, the command above is a straightforward starting point. Check the exported duration and playback before sharing.
- If you need repeated playback, decide how many passes and what total duration you need, then create that duration deliberately. A destination or player may offer its own repeat setting, independent of the MP4 file.
- FFmpeg documents an
ignore_loopoption for GIF input. Setting it to honor an infinite-loop instruction can leave processing without a natural end, so do not enable loop handling blindly when you need a finite MP4.
For timing-sensitive animations, inspect the exported video at normal playback speed. If motion looks too fast, too slow, or uneven, review the source frame delays and your conversion workflow rather than assuming the MP4 will reproduce the GIF’s repeat behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a conversion method
| Method | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | People comfortable with a command line who want repeatable settings and local processing. | Frame timing, dimensions, CRF choice, and whether the result plays once or repeats. |
| Adobe Media Encoder | People already using Adobe applications who prefer a desktop interface. | Available export formats depend on installed applications and codecs. Adobe lists H.264/MP4 as an export option; verify the available settings in your installation. |
| Browser converter | Occasional conversions where convenience matters more than detailed control. | Check the specific service’s format support and file-handling policy. Switch Labs says its converter processes files locally in the browser; that is the vendor’s claim, not an independently verified guarantee for other services. |
If your destination accepts only images or cannot play video, keep the GIF instead. Check the destination’s actual requirements before converting.
