Keep your distance, call the stranding hotline that covers your location, and give responders the whale’s precise location and what you can see. Do not touch, feed, move, or try to push it back into the water; trained responders must assess and handle stranded whales.
What to do right away
- Move back and keep others away. Keep children and pets with you at a safe distance. Do not enter the surf or walk onto unstable sand to get closer. NOAA’s West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network specifically instructs people to stay at least 100 yards away and keep pets at least 100 yards away; that figure is regional, not a universal rule. Follow the local authority’s distance guidance where you are. NOAA West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
- Call the appropriate stranding authority promptly. In the United States, use the NOAA regional hotline list below and check that the region covers the beach where you found the animal. Outside the U.S., contact the current official wildlife or marine mammal stranding authority for your country or coast.
- Give a clear location first. Provide the beach name, nearby landmarks, access point, or GPS coordinates if available. Then tell the dispatcher when you saw the whale, how many animals are present, whether each appears alive or dead, and any visible injury or entanglement. Describe the species only if you know it; do not approach to identify it.
- Offer a distant photo or video if it is safe and legal. Take it from where you are already standing, without getting closer, and share it with responders if they request it.
- Keep the area calm and leave room for responders. Discourage crowding and follow the instructions you receive. If the whale moves away, do not chase or try to corral it.
U.S. stranding hotlines
NOAA Fisheries lists these regional 24/7 marine mammal stranding hotlines. The correct number depends on the animal’s location; confirm the current listing and regional coverage on NOAA Fisheries’ hotline page before relying on a number.

NOAA also lists the Dolphin & Whale 911 app as a way to get information and connect with appropriate responders in covered U.S. regions. Coverage is not established for every location, so use the hotline or official local authority if the app does not cover your area. Check NOAA’s current reporting options.
Why you must not try to rescue the whale yourself
NOAA Fisheries says, “Live whales, dolphins, and porpoises that strand on land need specialized emergency care and should only be returned to the water by authorized and trained professionals.” NOAA’s guidance on stranded whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

Do not push, pull, tow, roll, or handle the animal, pour water on it, or feed it. A stranded whale may be seriously ill or injured, and an attempted refloat can cause further harm, delay professional assessment, and put bystanders at risk. Handling can also prevent responders from gathering useful information about its condition. A whale that is still or appears dead is not a reason to approach: marine mammals can behave unpredictably, and the safe response is to keep clear and report it. NOAA Fisheries: Do Not Move Stranded Whales, Dolphins, or Porpoises.
If you are outside the United States
The NOAA numbers and Dolphin & Whale 911 app are U.S. resources, not a worldwide reporting system. Contact the current official stranding or wildlife authority for the country or coast where you are. Local instructions can differ, including the safe distance and rules for pets; follow the authority responsible for that location rather than applying another region’s guidance.
