GIFs can look blurry, banded, or grainy because the format represents an image with a palette of no more than 256 colors. They can also be surprisingly large: lossless LZW compression does not eliminate the data in a large canvas, many animation frames, or complex changes from frame to frame.
Why GIFs lose visual quality
GIF uses palette-based color and LZW compression. The Library of Congress describes the format as using “LZW compression and palette-based color (256 or fewer shades)” (Library of Congress: GIF Graphics Interchange Format, Version 89a). The National Archives also records a maximum of 256 colors (National Archives: Graphics Interchange Format 89a).
When a photo, gradient, or other color-rich source is converted to GIF, the exporter has to represent its colors using that limited palette. Some colors are therefore approximated or discarded. The result can be visible banding in smooth gradients, softened detail, or a generally less faithful image. LZW is lossless for the indexed image data it compresses; it does not restore colors already lost when the palette was created.
Why a GIF may look grainy instead of smooth
Dithering places patterns of available colors next to each other to suggest colors the palette cannot represent. It can make transitions appear less harsh, but those patterns may look textured or grainy. The outcome depends on the original image and export settings; no single palette or dithering choice guarantees both the smallest file and the best appearance. MDN explains dithering in its image format guide.

Which images suit GIF
GIF is generally a better fit for simple graphics with a limited number of colors and hard edges than for photographs or smooth gradients. Google’s web.dev guide to GIF notes that the reduced palette can cause an obvious quality reduction and that GIF is efficient for simple, limited-palette images with hard edges.
Why an animated GIF can have a large file size
Lossless compression means the encoded indexed image data can be recovered without loss; it does not mean every GIF will be small. An animation is made from successive images, with a delay possible for each image (CompuServe’s GIF89a specification). More pixels and more frames mean more image data to encode. Broad changes from one frame to the next and visually complex content can also be harder to compress than flat areas.

Dithering can add fine patterns across an image. Those patterns may improve the appearance of a gradient, but they also add visual complexity, so the resulting file size should be checked rather than assumed from the color count alone.
How to make a GIF clearer or smaller
- Resize it to the actual display dimensions. Avoid exporting a canvas larger than the placement requires. Fewer pixels mean less image data, though resizing can soften detail if done poorly. Inspect the result at the size where it will be viewed.
- Remove frames or duration that do not contribute. Keep only the frames needed to communicate the motion. Reducing unnecessary frames can reduce the amount of animation data.
- Simplify color and motion where possible. Flat backgrounds, fewer gradients, and less full-frame change align better with GIF’s strengths. Check whether the simplified version still communicates what you need.
- Adjust palette and dithering together. A smaller palette can make banding more noticeable; dithering may disguise it while adding texture. Export a few candidates and compare both appearance and file size rather than assuming the maximum palette is automatically best.
- Consider another format if GIF is a poor fit. For a still image, PNG may be an option. The W3C describes PNG as a patent-free replacement for GIF and specifies indexed color up to 256 colors (W3C PNG Specification). For photographic animation or video, consider a modern video or animated-image format that the destination supports; compatibility varies by platform.
