To stop animated images in Firefox, open about:config, set image.animation_mode to none, then reload pages that are already open. Set it to once to let each animation play one time, or normal to restore normal behavior. First identify what is moving: Firefox’s standard Autoplay setting blocks audio and video, not animated GIF images.
First identify what is moving
People often call any short moving clip a GIF, but it may be an animated image, a video, or an animation created by the webpage. The distinction matters because each uses different browser controls.
- Animated image: The animation is contained in an image file such as a GIF. Firefox’s
image.animation_modepreference controls this. - Video: The browser’s media autoplay permissions can block audio and video from starting automatically.
- Page-created animation: Website effects may respond to your operating system or browser reduced-motion preference, but that preference does not stop classic GIF files.
Mozilla’s Firefox support documentation distinguishes media autoplay from animated images: its Autoplay controls do not stop GIFs. Mozilla’s autoplay settings guide covers audio and video; the advanced image preference is documented separately in MDN’s image element reference.
Stop animated images in Firefox
- Enter
about:configin Firefox’s address bar and open the configuration editor. - Search for
image.animation_mode. - Set the preference to
noneto prevent animated images from animating. Chooseonceif you want each animation to play a single time instead. - Reload pages that were already open, then check whether the moving image has stopped.
To restore ordinary animation, change the preference to normal. MDN defines the values as normal for normal playback, none for no animation, and once for one play. See the imageAnimationBehavior documentation.

Block autoplaying audio and video in Firefox
Use this setting when the moving content is a video or when a site starts media unexpectedly. It does not stop animated GIF images.
- Open Firefox Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Under Permissions, select Settings next to Autoplay.
- Choose whether Firefox should block audio, block audio and video (including muted media), or allow audio and video by default.
A site-specific permission can override the default. Labels and routes may vary by Firefox version and operating system; consult Mozilla’s current Autoplay instructions if your Settings page differs.

What to do in other browsers
Do not assume a browser’s video autoplay control will stop GIFs. MDN notes that reduced-motion settings do not affect classic GIFs because their animation is contained in the image, and that Safari’s Auto-Play control does not work for GIFs. The available built-in controls differ by browser and version, and the cited documentation does not establish a complete current GIF-control guide for Chrome, Edge, Safari, or mobile browsers.
Consider an extension only if needed
MDN lists GIF Blocker and Gif Scrubber as examples of Chrome extensions for GIF control. A listing is not a guarantee that an extension is maintained, safe, available, or compatible with your browser version. Before installing one, check its current publisher, requested permissions, recent reviews, and supported browser versions.
