Give an AI financial app only the access needed for the feature you intend to use. Start with the smallest set of accounts and data types available, and treat permission to place trades, move money, or make payments as a separate, higher-impact authorization—not as an ordinary part of linking an account. Before approving either kind of access, check the app’s authorization screen and your bank or brokerage’s terms for the exact scope, duration, confirmation steps, and revocation controls.
What permissions can a financial app request?
“Link my account” can cover several kinds of access. Depending on the app and the financial institution, shared data may include your name and contact details, account names and types, balances, account or routing numbers, and transaction dates, amounts, types, and descriptions. One set of login credentials can sometimes expose several accounts—such as checking, savings, and credit cards—rather than just the account you had in mind.
Some connections also request identity details, holdings, liabilities, or other information. A feature that summarizes spending may need transactions; one that displays a balance may not. Check the actual account and data selections on the consent screen, and deselect anything unnecessary when the institution offers that choice. The available controls vary by institution and integration.
How do read access and action permissions differ?
Reading financial data lets an app retrieve information for features such as balance summaries or spending analysis. Action authority is different: it may allow an app to initiate a stock order, transfer, or payment. Do not infer the scope from a label such as “read-only” or “trading access.” Permission names and implementation vary, and the materials reviewed do not establish one universal trading-permission model for AI financial apps.

| Permission type | What it may enable | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Account-data access | Viewing selected balances, transactions, identity information, holdings, or other available data | Which accounts and data types are selected, whether access is limited to viewing, how long it lasts, and how to revoke it |
| Trade, transfer, or payment authority | Initiating an order, transfer, or payment, depending on the specific authorization | Which actions are allowed, any limits, whether you must confirm each action, and how to revoke the authority at the app and institution |
Only approve action authority if you understand exactly what the app can initiate, what safeguards or confirmations apply, and where you can withdraw permission. If the authorization screen or brokerage terms do not make those points clear, do not grant it until you have confirmed them with the provider.
What should you check before connecting an account?
- Match access to a feature. Identify the feature you want and the specific information it needs. Do not grant a broader scope simply because it is presented as the default.
- Review account and data selections. Confirm which individual accounts are included. If offered, limit the connection to relevant accounts or data types—for example, checking data without credit-card data, or identity information without transaction history.
- Understand the connection method. In an OAuth/API flow, the institution sends you to its own website or app to authenticate and authorize sharing, then returns you to the connection flow. Plaid says it does not store credentials in OAuth/API connections. For some non-OAuth connections, Plaid says users provide credentials to Plaid, which stores them for the connection; Plaid says it does not share those login credentials with the connected app. These descriptions concern Plaid’s connection methods, not every financial-data provider. Check which method your institution actually offers and what the app and provider say about credential handling.
- Read the action authorization separately. If the app asks to trade, transfer, or pay, inspect the exact permitted actions, any transaction limits, and required confirmations. Verify the terms with the brokerage or financial institution rather than relying on a general app label.
- Find the duration and exit route. Check whether authorization expires and how to revoke it from the app, data provider, and institution. Do not assume that removing an app connection controls every layer.
- Check what happens to collected data. Revoking access can stop future sharing without deleting copies already held by the app. Review its retention terms and whether deletion requires a separate request.
Why the connection method and account choices matter
Plaid’s OAuth guide describes consent that can be scoped by account or data type where supported. For instance, an institution may let a user share checking but not credit-card data, or identity details but not transaction history. An institution may also require a particular permission for a product to work. The choices visible to you depend on the institution and its integration; do not assume every connection provides the same controls.

- PRECISE COMPATIBILITY: Designed exclusively for iPhone 16 6.1" and iPhone 15 6.1". Not compatible with iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Plus, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, 16 Plus or 16 Pro Max. Please check the exact model of your smartphone before purchase. European/global model: A3287.
- 28° PRIVACY ANTI-SPY FILTER: The privacy filter limits side-angle screen visibility. When viewed directly from the front, the content remains visible, while from the side the screen gradually appears darker, helping to protect your personal information.
- 3 TEMPERED GLASS PROTECTORS + INSTALLATION KIT: The pack includes 3 tempered glass screen protectors and a handy installation tool to ensure the protector is positioned correctly on the screen.
- 9H TEMPERED GLASS: Made from durable 9H-hardness tempered glass, it helps protect the screen against everyday scratches and impacts. The oleophobic coating reduces fingerprints, smudges, and residue, making the screen easier to clean.
- CASE-FRIENDLY DESIGN: The protector is designed with a small margin around the screen edges to ensure compatibility with most cases. This is not a sizing error; the gap prevents the case from lifting the tempered glass.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s October 2024 final-rule analysis reported approximate estimates from consumer-authorized third-party access attempts in 2022: more than 2 billion attempts for payment services, more than 1 billion for identity verification, tens of billions for account monitoring and personal-finance management, and over 1 billion for other uses. These are historical estimates of access attempts, not successful transfers or a current-year count. The same analysis found credential-free APIs accounted for 24% of aggregator access attempts in 2022, while screen scraping accounted for 50%; those are historical shares in the CFPB’s analyzed aggregator data, not measurements of a particular app or institution. The practical point is to inspect the connection actually offered to you rather than infer its method from industry-wide figures.
How to revoke access—and what disconnection does not mean
Start with the app’s own connection settings, then check the data provider’s and financial institution’s controls. Plaid says its Portal can disconnect supported app connections; some institutions also provide their own access controls. Plaid’s guidance gives Chase as a specific example: Chase users may need to use the Chase Security Center to revoke or limit access. That procedure should not be assumed to apply to other institutions.

Disconnection generally stops future sharing, but it does not necessarily delete information already collected by the app. Plaid says users may need to contact the app directly to request deletion; if Plaid Portal cannot remove a connection, Plaid directs users to its privacy request form. After disconnecting, confirm whether access has ended at the app, provider, and bank or brokerage layers, and make a separate deletion request if needed.
What to know about data quality in an AI-generated answer
An AI summary is only as complete as the data its connection provides. OpenAI’s Finances help page says that, for its ChatGPT example, institution data availability can vary: a connection may provide balances without full transaction history, holdings, loan details, APRs, or due dates. It also warns that spending categorization can be inaccurate—for example, transfers, credit-card payments, reimbursements, or duplicate pending transactions may be counted incorrectly. Check the app’s sync status and ask which underlying data supported an answer before relying on it. These are ChatGPT-specific cautions, not proof that every AI finance app has the same limitations.

A product-specific example: Finances in ChatGPT
OpenAI says Finances in ChatGPT links supported financial accounts through Plaid. Users choose which accounts to connect; synced data refreshes automatically, and the Finances page displays the latest sync status. OpenAI says users can disconnect through Settings > Apps > Finances or from the Finances home page. For this ChatGPT connection, OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days, and data associated with that ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days under Plaid’s policies. Disconnecting it does not disconnect other Plaid connections authorized separately. These terms apply to this specific connection and should not be generalized to other apps.
ChatGPT’s credit-score connection is separate from Plaid-linked bank accounts: OpenAI says identity-verification details are entered on Experian’s form, and OpenAI receives the credit data and status the user authorizes. The help page describes this as a soft inquiry that does not affect the credit score. This is a distinct authorization, so review its own consent and scope rather than treating it as part of bank-account access.
