Meta renamed it “AI info” on July 1, 2024, then said in September that labels for content detected as only edited or modified would move into the post menu while generated content would keep a visible label.
Why real photos received a “Made with AI” label
Meta’s labeling system used two kinds of information: technical signals shared by content-creation tools and an uploader’s disclosure. Those signals could indicate that AI had been used somewhere in an image’s editing history without establishing that AI created the whole image. Meta acknowledged that content with minor AI modifications, such as retouching, could receive the label.
That distinction was easy to miss in the phrase “Made with AI.” Photographers reported that photos they considered real—including a photograph by former White House photographer Pete Souza—were labeled. The reports highlighted a mismatch between the label’s wording and the extent of AI involvement. They do not establish the cause of every individual label.
Souza suspected that a change to Adobe’s cropping workflow might have contributed to his photo being flagged. Meta did not confirm that explanation, so it should be treated as a theory rather than a known cause.

What Meta changed, and when
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| February 6, 2024 | Meta said it planned to identify AI-related content using technical indicators, including C2PA and IPTC information. It also noted that some content could go undetected and that markers could be removed. Meta’s announcement |
| April 5, 2024 | Meta announced a broader approach for manipulated media on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, using industry-shared indicators and user disclosures. Meta’s policy update |
| May 2024 | Meta began applying the “Made with AI” label to AI-generated or edited content, according to its later EU Code of Practice report. Meta’s EU Code of Practice report |
| June 21, 2024 | Photographers’ reports drew attention to real photos carrying the label. Meta said it was evaluating how the labels reflected the amount of AI used. TechCrunch’s report |
| July 1, 2024 | Meta changed “Made with AI” to “AI info,” saying technical indicators could flag minor modifications and did not always provide enough context. Meta’s policy update |
| September 12, 2024 | Meta said labels for content detected as only edited or modified by AI tools would move into the post menu. Generated content would continue to receive a visible label, with an indication of whether the label was based on industry signals or self-disclosure. Meta’s announcement |
Meta later described the distinction between edit-only content and generated content as rolled out in the second half of 2024. Its report also discusses risk-based labels for some advertising creative; that is separate from the organic-post labeling changes described here. Meta’s EU Code of Practice report
What “AI info” does—and does not—tell you
It is not proof that the whole image was generated
An “AI info” label may reflect AI editing or a technical signal associated with an image, as well as a creator’s disclosure. The label alone does not verify how much AI was used or whether the underlying photograph is authentic.

No label does not prove an image is non-AI
Meta has said that not all AI-generated content can be identified and that invisible markers can be stripped. A missing label therefore cannot establish that an image was made without AI. Meta’s explanation of detection limits
Signals and disclosures are different
Meta described labels as potentially based on industry-shared technical signals or on a person’s disclosure. Those categories explain why a label appeared; they do not independently authenticate an image or measure the extent of AI involvement.

What the backlash changed
The revision happened in two stages. In July 2024, Meta replaced the potentially misleading “Made with AI” wording with “AI info.” In September, it said that content detected as only modified or edited would have its label placed in the post menu, while generated content would retain a visible label. That is a change to both the meaning users might infer from the wording and the prominence of edit-only labels—not a claim that all AI-related labeling stopped.
These events document Meta’s 2024 policy changes. The cited sources do not establish that every detail remains identical across Meta apps, regions, or versions in October 2026. For a particular post, check the label explanation in the app and Meta’s current official policy.
