Start by listening, then help your child decide what—if anything—they want to do next. A club can mean more than its activity: it may provide friends, a trusted adult, a weekly routine, or a place to belong. Ask what your child will miss rather than assuming, and be honest about what is known about the closure.
Start by listening to what the club meant to your child
Choose a quiet moment and ask a simple, open question: “I heard the club is closing. What feels hardest about that?” Give your child time to answer. They may miss the activity, a particular friend or leader, the weekly routine, or simply having somewhere familiar to go.
Acknowledge the specific thing they name. For example: “You’ll miss seeing Maya on Tuesdays,” or “You were proud of what you learned there.” You do not need to fix the problem in the first conversation. Ask whether they want you to listen, help with practical next steps, or give them time to think.
Avoid dismissing the loss with phrases such as “It’s only a club,” “You’ll find something better,” or “Don’t be sad.” Those responses can minimize what matters to your child or promise an outcome you cannot guarantee. Children differ in how they respond; a child who is quiet may not be ready to talk yet.

Explain what is happening honestly
Use clear, age-appropriate language. Separate what is confirmed from what is uncertain, and say when you can check for more information. Do not speculate about why the club is closing or promise it will reopen unless you know that is true. Your child may ask the same question more than once; answer calmly and return to the conversation when needed.

Help them keep the parts they want
Ask whether your child would like to stay in touch with friends or a trusted leader. If they do, you could ask other families about exchanging contact details or ask the organizers whether a final gathering or information about another venue is possible. These options depend on what the club can offer, your child’s wishes, privacy, and safeguarding rules.
If the activity itself is what they miss, look at alternatives together without treating any one option as a replacement for the original club. Ask what matters most before searching:

- Doing the same activity, or trying something new
- Seeing familiar friends or meeting new people
- Having a similar leader, setting, or day of the week
- Cost, travel, accessibility, and the amount of commitment
- Whether your child feels ready to try something now
Possibilities might include another local group, a school activity, a library or community program, or a low-pressure version of the activity at home. Availability varies by location, and your child does not have to choose immediately.
Make the former club time predictable
If the club met on a regular day, talk together about what to do during that time for the next few weeks. Your child might prefer to see a friend, have a quiet evening, try one activity, or leave the time open at first. Keep other dependable routines steady where possible.

HealthyChildren.org’s guidance on routines and support concerns bereavement, not club closures, so it should not be taken as evidence that the experiences are equivalent. Its general point about dependable routines can still inform a practical plan for an unsettled week.

Age, temperament, disability, social needs, and what the child valued about the club all affect what may help. Do not impose a timetable for moving on or assume every child will react the same way. A child who finds changes in routine difficult may benefit from advance notice, a visual plan, or a gradual introduction to a new activity. If your child has established support needs, ask their usual professionals what adjustments may be useful.

Guidance on educational transitions from NICE addresses school transitions rather than club closures. It offers indirect context for why continuity, relationships, and a sense of belonging can matter when a familiar setting changes.
Know when to ask for more help
A child being upset about a club closing does not by itself mean they have a mental-health disorder. If distress persists or interferes with sleep, school, eating, relationships, usual activities, or self-care, talk with their pediatrician or GP. School staff or a counselor may also be able to help, depending on the concern and what is available locally. Action for Children advises parents who are worried to speak with a GP or school; HealthyChildren.org discusses functional concerns in a bereavement context. These are general pointers, not a clinical rule specific to clubs.
If your child talks about self-harm or suicide, seek urgent professional help through the appropriate local emergency or crisis service.
