When a key player is unavailable, coaches may promote a backup, distribute the workload across several players, or change personnel and assignments. The depth-chart ripple depends less on the name listed next and more on who can execute the missing player’s role, how prepared the unit is, and what the matchup requires. A chart change is not, by itself, proof of how much the team’s performance will change.
What changes when a starter is unavailable?
The immediate change is a gap in a role, not simply a name at the top of a list. A starter may handle particular snaps, packages, assignments, or communication duties. If that player is out, teammates must cover those responsibilities, whether or not one backup is formally promoted.

Coaches can respond in several ways: give one player most of the work, rotate multiple players, or adjust personnel and responsibilities to keep the unit functioning. Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez described needing enough depth to use multiple corners, safeties, and STAR players in a game. Who takes the open reps?
The player listed next is a useful starting point, but not a guaranteed one-for-one replacement. To understand who may actually play, look for indications of practice reps, previous game work, familiarity with the role, and whether coaches have discussed a rotation. Georgia coordinators have described monitoring position-group reps during practice competition, while Martinez said younger and older players alike can benefit from quality reps when an injury creates an opening. Direct backup
A direct replacement can preserve a familiar structure when that player has prepared for the same assignments and can handle the missing player’s responsibilities. A depth-chart promotion may signal that the staff is considering this approach, but participation and workload still depend on the game plan and availability.
Rotation or personnel adjustment
Coaches may spread snaps among several players or change which personnel group is on the field. That can help cover a role with the available depth, but it may also change who communicates or handles particular assignments. The useful question is not merely “Who is next?” but “How will the unit cover the missing player’s work?”

What determines how much the absence matters?

Those figures belong to that game and to Indiana’s published account; they do not establish that injuries generally have little effect or that another team will respond the same way. Indiana linebacker Isaiah Jones described the standard this way: “If one guys goes down, there should be no let-off and no difference in the guy that steps in.” That is the team’s stated expectation, not a statistical finding about replacement performance. Availability is time- and competition-specific. For participants in the 2025–26 College Football Playoff, schools were required to submit availability reports three days before each game, update them daily, and provide a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. The policy distinguishes pre-game from game-day designations. It applies to that playoff season, not automatically to every college football game or a future season. For other games, consult the relevant team’s current official report or coach comments and note when they were published. A status label or depth-chart position should not be treated as certainty about whether a player will participate, how many snaps the player will take, or how well the replacement will perform.
