China’s CHIEF1300 centrifuge can generate up to 300 times Earth’s gravity in acceptance testing; 100 g is the level used in a reported scale-model example, not the machine’s maximum. The centrifuge is part of Zhejiang University’s larger CHIEF research facility in Hangzhou, where researchers use intense acceleration to study selected gravity-driven processes in compact models.
What is CHIEF1300?
CHIEF1300 is a large research centrifuge at Zhejiang University’s Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility (CHIEF) in Hangzhou. It is one machine within a broader facility, rather than a stand-alone laboratory or a consumer device. The State Council’s September 30, 2025 report described CHIEF1300 as operating after acceptance testing.
The centrifuge spins an experimental cabin on a rotating arm. CHIEF1300’s arm is reported to have a 6.4-meter radius. As the arm rotates, the cabin experiences centrifugal acceleration; increasing the rotation rate increases that acceleration. The machine was placed below ground, and its vacuum and wall-cooling systems are intended to reduce air resistance and machine heating, according to the facility’s chief engineer in the same report.
Why the headline says 100× Earth’s gravity
“100× Earth’s gravity” means an acceleration of 100 g: roughly 100 times the acceleration a person experiences at Earth’s surface. It is an illustrative level used to explain centrifuge modeling. CHIEF1300’s reported acceptance-testing range was 10–300 g, so 100 g is not its stated maximum.

In a centrifuge model, researchers can use stronger acceleration to investigate some gravity-driven behavior at a smaller physical scale. In the facility’s reported example, a 1-meter model at 100 g represents a structure on a 100-meter scale. The report also says a contaminant plume journey that would take a century in the field can be represented in 3.65 days under its 100 g example. These are facility-reported illustrations, not universal conversion rules: the relationship depends on the process and conditions being modeled.
What CHIEF1300’s numbers mean
Reports published in 2025 give CHIEF1300 a capacity of 1,300 g·t, an acceptance-tested acceleration range reaching 300 g, and the ability to accommodate loads up to 20 tonnes. The Beijing International Science and Technology Innovation Center account reports the machine’s capacity and maximum acceleration; the International Science and Technology Innovation Center report gives the testing range and load limit.

The units describe different properties. “g” expresses acceleration relative to Earth gravity; “g·t” combines acceleration and load as a centrifuge capacity measure. A capacity figure such as 1,300 g·t is therefore not a claim that the centrifuge reaches 1,300 g.
CHIEF as a whole has been described as comprising three centrifuges, six experimental cabins and 18 onboard devices. Those are facility-level figures, not a count of the cabins or devices on CHIEF1300 alone.

What researchers use it to study
Hypergravity centrifuges help researchers investigate systems in which gravity affects behavior, such as soil, water, structures and geological materials. The facility’s stated areas include geotechnical hazards, major infrastructure, deep-sea and deep-underground engineering, waste disposal, geological processes and materials.
Official coverage reports pilot experiments involving earthquake effects on a hydropower dam foundation, waves and tsunami effects on the seabed, deep-sea pressure for methane-hydrate research, and alloy synthesis. These examples describe reported facility experiments; they do not by themselves establish particular research findings or conclusions.

Why older specifications do not describe CHIEF1300’s test results
A 2019 Zhejiang University project approval report listed planned project-level specifications of 1,900 g·t capacity, 1,300 g centrifugal acceleration and a 32-tonne maximum load. Those were design specifications for the broader project, not the operating results reported for CHIEF1300 after its 2025 acceptance testing. For CHIEF1300, the later reports give 1,300 g·t capacity, up to 300 g in acceptance testing and loads up to 20 tonnes.

A September 2025 launch account said CHIEF1500 and CHIEF1900 were still being installed, with construction expected to finish by the end of that year. The available official updates cited here do not establish whether those machines later entered service, or give a complete commissioning status for the facility as of October 4, 2026. Zhejiang University’s CHIEF homepage lists CHIEF1300 activation coverage from September 2025 and a November 5, 2025 acceptance notice for a material-testing device, but that notice does not settle the status of CHIEF1500 or CHIEF1900.

What “hypergravity” does—and does not—mean
CHIEF1300 does not create a new gravitational field in the same sense as a planet. Its rotating motion produces strong centrifugal acceleration inside the experimental cabin. Researchers use that acceleration as a controlled way to reproduce selected effects of gravity at laboratory scale. It can make some experiments faster or more compact, but it cannot automatically reproduce every aspect of a real-world environment; the model must be designed for the physical process under study.
