Neither AI nor human songwriting has one fixed advantage: it depends on who makes the consequential creative choices and how much human expression shapes the finished song. AI can be one element in a songwriting workflow, while people contribute ideas, selection, arrangement, revision, and performance. The useful comparison is not simply “machine versus person,” but how those contributions affect creative control, listener response, and rights.

What counts as AI songwriting?

“AI songwriting” can describe different ways of bringing AI into song creation, rather than a single process in which a system produces a complete song without human involvement. The Human-AI Songwriting Processes dataset documents a range of human-AI songwriting practices, making a strict AI-versus-human divide a poor fit for many workflows. The dataset was presented in the 2024 ISMIR proceedings.

A practical way to compare two songs is to ask who made the choices that most shaped the result: the lyrics, melody, structure, arrangement, and revisions. A person might use AI at one stage and make the central expressive decisions elsewhere; another workflow could leave more of those decisions to a generative system. The label alone does not tell you how much creative control a songwriter exercised.

Where each approach can contribute

Human songwriting

Human songwriting places creative decisions directly with people: they can decide what a song means, which details to emphasize, and how lyrics, melody, structure, and arrangement should work together. Its defining strength in this comparison is not a guaranteed level of quality, but the ability to identify human-authored expression and creative choices within the work.

AI-assisted songwriting

AI can be part of a human-led process without replacing it. The key distinction is whether it assists human expression or stands in for human creativity. The U.S. Copyright Office illustrates assistive AI use with the vocal track on Randy Travis’s “Where That’s Coming From,” which modifies a human singer’s performance. That is an example of vocal production, not evidence about how lyrics or melodies are authored. The Copyright Office’s Part 2 report discusses how human-authored expression and AI-generated material can appear in the same work.

There is no evidence here for a general claim that AI songwriting is faster, cheaper, more original, or consistently better or worse than human songwriting. Those outcomes depend on the process and on what a listener values.

What listeners judged—and how disclosure changed the result

A September 2026 study by Siying Qin and Xueyang Zhang examined music undergraduates in two experiments and follow-up interviews. In blind listening, the researchers found no significant difference in perceived creativity and expressiveness between AI-composed and human-composed works. When authorship was disclosed, participants rated AI-composed works significantly lower on those dimensions, while ratings of human-composed works were largely unchanged. The study is indexed in PubMed.

This finding is limited to the study’s student participants, works, and listening conditions. It does not establish that people in general cannot distinguish AI-created music, or that all listeners respond negatively to disclosed AI authorship. It does show why reception can depend both on what people hear and what they are told about how a piece was made.

How U.S. copyright treats human and AI contributions

Copyright questions are separate from whether a song sounds creative or expressive to a listener. In its January 29, 2025 Part 2 report, the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that “the outputs of generative AI can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements.” The Office says human-authored expression perceptible in the output, or a human’s creative arrangement or modification, may qualify. Providing prompts alone does not establish human authorship of the generated output. At the same time, AI assistance or the inclusion of AI-generated material does not automatically prevent protection for a larger human-generated work. The Copyright Office’s report announcement summarizes the conclusion.

This is U.S. copyright guidance, not a guarantee that a particular song or contribution qualifies, and it should not be applied as a statement of another country’s law. The Copyright Office’s AI topic page lists its AI reports and related materials; report status can change, so consult the official page for current publication information.

What performing-rights registration policies do—and do not—settle

In October 2025, ASCAP, BMI, and SOCAN announced that each would accept registrations for compositions combining AI-generated musical content with human-authored elements. That is a policy of the named organizations, not a universal rule about copyright or a determination of ownership in every case. Registering a composition with a performing-rights organization does not by itself settle whether particular material is copyrightable or who owns it.

BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill described the announcement as “an important first step in protecting human creativity as AI technologies evolve, while supporting the songwriters and composers who choose to use AI as a tool to enhance their creative process.” The announcement sets out the organizations’ registration-policy alignment.

A useful way to compare two songwriting workflows

  • Trace the creative choices: Identify who shaped the lyrics, melody, structure, arrangement, and revisions that define the finished song.
  • Separate assistance from substitution: Ask whether AI supported a person’s expression or generated material that the person did not substantially shape.
  • Keep listening judgments in context: A listener’s response may change when authorship is disclosed, but the available study does not predict every audience’s reaction.
  • Check the relevant rules: U.S. copyright analysis and the registration policies of ASCAP, BMI, or SOCAN answer different questions; neither should be treated as a worldwide rule.
