AGEIA announced its PhysX processor and NovodeX physics SDK in 2005, but GDC 2006 was the consumer-hardware launch and demonstration moment. The story had two parts: a dedicated PC add-in card designed to accelerate physics calculations, and development software that studios could use with software execution or optional hardware acceleration.

What AGEIA launched at GDC 2006

AGEIA’s GDC story joined a physical product with a developer platform. The PhysX physics processing unit (PPU) was a separate processor intended for PC game systems. The NovodeX/PhysX SDK was the development technology used to build physics effects; using the SDK did not inherently require owning the PPU.

AGEIA had announced both the planned PC card and the NovodeX Physics SDK in March 2005. Its announcement presented the SDK as middleware for creating physics-rich game environments and positioned the PPU as an optional way to accelerate those calculations. Manju Hegde, AGEIA’s CEO and co-founder, forecast in 2005 that top-tier games able to use hardware acceleration would reach the market by Christmas that year. That was a company expectation, not confirmation of what later shipped. AGEIA’s 2005 announcement, reproduced by Game Developer

How the hardware and SDK differed

Part of the story What it was What it did not mean
PhysX PPU A dedicated PC add-in processor intended to accelerate game-physics calculations, such as dynamic interactions and effects. It was not required for every game or every effect built with the SDK.
NovodeX/PhysX SDK Developer technology for creating and integrating physics effects, with software execution and optional hardware acceleration paths. SDK support did not establish that a title used a PhysX card.
PlayStation 3 SDK license A separate platform agreement for using and optimizing the SDK for PS3 development on the Cell processor. It did not mean the PC add-in PPU was part of the PS3.

Keeping those distinctions clear explains why AGEIA promoted both a new hardware category and middleware. The card was a specific PC product; the SDK was the development route that could reach software and other platform implementations.

What was shown and discussed at GDC

GDC gave AGEIA a venue to make the proposed hardware benefit tangible through game demonstrations, SDK discussion and research demos. The official GDC Vault listing for “The Unlimited Potential of Advanced Game Physics” described content about the AGEIA SDK and processor for PC and next-generation consoles, game-franchise demonstrations on PhysX hardware, and research demonstrations. The listing describes planned session content; it is not by itself proof that every demonstration ran as planned. GDC Vault session listing

Game Developer also reported that Crazy Ball, an Independent Games Festival entry, was being shown on the GDC floor with AGEIA hardware. The show-floor demonstration reflected the event’s effort to connect physics processing with visible gameplay rather than only technical promises. Game Developer’s GDC coverage

When the PhysX card became available

Contemporary launch coverage on March 22, 2006, reported PhysX chips in new systems from Alienware, Falcon Northwest and Dell. The same report said standalone add-in boards were expected to become widely available beginning in May. That May date was a contemporary expectation, not confirmation that every retailer carried a board on that schedule. GameSpot’s March 22, 2006 availability report

This distinction matters when interpreting the word “launch”: buyers could encounter the technology through specified OEM systems before standalone cards were expected to become broadly available. Those 2006 reports do not establish present-day stock, driver support, compatibility with current PCs, or whether a used card is a worthwhile purchase.

How the PS3 agreement fits the timeline

Sony Computer Entertainment announced on July 21, 2005, a strategic licensing agreement with AGEIA for the PhysX SDK, also known as NovodeX, for PlayStation 3 development. Sony said the SDK was optimized for the Cell processor and would be included in PS3 development tools. This is evidence of a software and platform relationship, not evidence that Sony’s console used AGEIA’s PC PPU. Sony’s July 21, 2005 announcement

What AGEIA’s adoption numbers meant

At GDC 2006, AGEIA told Game Developer that 60 developers were then using the PhysX SDK and projected around 100 PhysX-supporting titles through 2006 and 2007. The first number is the company’s stated adoption count; the second is a forecast. Neither should be treated as an independently verified tally of released games or confirmed hardware users.
