Neither is the universally better open world: they offer different kinds of immersion, so setting and pace are the best first filters.

Red Dead Redemption 2: a frontier shaped by the gang
Rockstar’s official listing presents Story Mode and Red Dead Online alongside Arthur Morgan’s life with the Van der Linde gang. PlayStation describes the 1899 setting and activities including hunting and gang life. The world suits players who enjoy riding out, taking on small diversions and returning to a central story rather than treating every minute as a combat build exercise.

Camp life is part of that texture: PlayStation.Blog’s pre-launch guide discusses camp conversations, hunting, upgrades and fast travel as an upgrade. That guide predates release, so it is design context rather than a guide to later patches.
Cyberpunk 2077: a character-led journey through Night City
Cyberpunk 2077 is the choice if a dense futuristic city and a character-led journey sound more compelling than the frontier. PC Gamer’s editorial assessment frames Night City as the setting for V’s story; it is an editorial perspective, not a publisher specification. The optional Phantom Liberty expansion takes V into Dogtown for a spy-thriller story, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s expansion page.

Which game has more role-playing builds and combat flexibility?
Cyberpunk 2077 is the stronger fit for build-driven progression. CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.0 announcement, dated September 21, 2023, documents a perk-tree overhaul and cyberware changes, as well as vehicle combat, enemy AI and police-system changes. The update rolled out for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is meaningful evidence of how the game’s systems changed after launch, but it should not be mistaken for a claim that this is the latest patch.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also includes combat and player choices, but its central appeal is more directed toward the story and frontier immersion than extensive build customization. The available official descriptions do not offer a controlled, measured comparison of the two games’ combat variety; this is a distinction in emphasis, not a claim that one lacks options.

Which one is slower paced?
Red Dead Redemption 2 asks for more patience with its western journey. If you enjoy living in a story and spending time on activities away from the main plot, that slower rhythm can be a strength. If you want more immediate action and a character build to shape your approach, Cyberpunk 2077 is the more likely fit. These are editorial judgments, not measured speed comparisons, and individual missions or play styles can change the feel.
Should you play Red Dead Redemption 2 or Cyberpunk 2077 first?
For someone torn between the two, decide by the setting you most want to inhabit and the pace you are willing to accept. Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 first if the gang, the western atmosphere and unhurried frontier activities are the draw. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 first if Night City, science fiction and build-oriented action sound better. Both are story-driven open-world games, but they do not deliver the same kind of immersion.

What should you check before buying?
- Confirm your platform and edition. Store availability and compatibility can vary by region and change. The US PlayStation listing identifies Red Dead Redemption 2 as a PS4 product and notes PS5 play subject to compatibility conditions; check your platform’s current store page before purchasing.
- Check whether Phantom Liberty is included. CD PROJEKT RED states on its purchase page that “Cyberpunk 2077 is required to play Phantom Liberty.” Treat the expansion as optional and verify whether the edition you select bundles it.
- For PC, verify current system requirements. The 2023 Update 2.0 notice said requirements changed and an SSD became a requirement at that time. That historical note is not a substitute for the current requirements for your version.
- Compare current prices in your own store. A same-region, same-date price comparison is not established here; sale pricing, platform and edition can all affect the total.
What the award claim does—and does not—tell you
The US PlayStation Store listing says Red Dead Redemption 2 has “over 175 Game of the Year Awards and recipient of over 250 perfect scores.” Those are the storefront’s published claims, accessed in 2026, not an independently reconciled count. They signal the store’s award framing, but they cannot tell you which game best matches your taste.
