A small .NET console app can sort files already in your Downloads folder in a one-time pass. The example below uses a folder path you configure, processes only files directly inside that folder, routes known extensions into clearly named categories, and sends unknown types to Other. It skips name collisions rather than overwriting existing files. It does not run continuously or watch for new downloads.

Choose the Downloads folder and sorting rules

Downloads is not a documented member of .NET’s Environment.SpecialFolder enum. That enum includes values such as MyDocuments and UserProfile, but it does not provide one portable Downloads value. For a simple, predictable tool, let the user supply the folder path; a more polished app can add operating-system-specific discovery. Microsoft’s SpecialFolder reference documents the available enum values.

The sample uses a path stored in an environment variable named DOWNLOADS_PATH. Set it to the actual folder on the machine before running the program. Its rules are intentionally visible: PDFs go to Documents, common image formats to Images, and everything else to Other. Change the mapping to suit your own workflow; an extension indicates a file-name convention, not necessarily the file’s contents.

Create a one-time organizer

This example targets .NET 6 or later and performs a single top-level scan. It does not recurse into subdirectories, which prevents it from processing the category folders it creates. When a destination name already exists, it leaves the source file in place and reports the skip.

What the code includes—and leaves alone

  • Directory.EnumerateFiles returns an enumerable of file names meeting the requested criteria. Enumeration is lazy: names can be yielded as the enumerator advances rather than first building a complete array. Each new enumeration starts anew; the result is not a cached snapshot. The sample requests only top-level files. See Microsoft’s EnumerateFiles reference.

  • Path.GetExtension and the explicit mapping determine the category. Unmapped extensions, including files without an extension, go to Other for later review rather than being deleted or assigned a guessed type.

Understand move and collision behavior

File.Move(source, destination) moves a file and, with this overload, throws if the destination already exists. The explicit existence check makes the sample’s policy easy to understand, but another process could create that destination between the check and the move; the exception handler reports a failed move instead of claiming success. Microsoft’s File.Move documentation describes the overloads, including the overwrite option available in .NET Core 3.0 and later.

Skipping protects an existing destination but can leave files unsorted. Other deliberate policies include generating a unique name, asking the user, or overwriting. Do not switch to overwrite without deciding that replacing the destination is acceptable. The two-argument call shown here does not request overwrite.

A move is not always an atomic rename. Microsoft documents that a cross-volume file move is performed as a copy followed by deletion after a successful copy. If a file is in use during a cross-volume move, the destination copy may be made without deleting the source. The sample reports common I/O and access errors, but it does not attempt automatic retries or resolve every possible failure.

Run once or keep watching?

The console program exits after its one scan. This is the simpler choice when you want control over when files are sorted. To process new downloads automatically while the program is running, you can add FileSystemWatcher, but a watcher is not a durable queue of every change: a burst of activity can overflow its event buffer and cause individual notifications to be lost. Microsoft documents the watcher events and error behavior in its FileSystemWatcher reference.

Approach What it does Trade-off
One-time scan Processes files when you launch the program. Simple and predictable, but it will not handle later downloads until run again.
Continuous watcher Can react to file creation or rename events while the program stays active. Needs error handling and a recovery scan because notifications can be lost.

A watcher-based design should handle creation and rename events, keep event handlers short, and avoid moving a file before a download has finished writing it. A delay or debounce can help, but is not proof that a download is complete. Handle watcher errors and rescan the folder when notifications may have been lost; a periodic full scan can also reconcile missed changes.

Keep directory moves separate from file sorting

This organizer enumerates files, not directories. Directory.Move moves a directory and its contents; it is not a way to merge two folders. In .NET Core 3.0 and later, it throws IOException if the destination directory already exists. See Microsoft’s Directory.Move documentation before designing a workflow that relocates whole folders.
