The Milky Way is a barred spiral, and its measured structure is broadly ordinary for nearby spiral galaxies—though one comparison finds its thick disk thinner and less extended than expected in a specific class of simulations. It is not exceptionally large: rare super spirals can have disks several times wider.
What kind of spiral galaxy is the Milky Way?
The Milky Way has a disk, a central bulge, spiral arms and a surrounding halo. It is also a barred spiral: a bar-shaped concentration of stars crosses its central region. NASA identifies both the Milky Way and Andromeda as barred spirals, and estimates that about two-thirds of spiral galaxies have bars. That proportion is approximate, not a precise census. Is the Milky Way typical among spiral galaxies?
A 2024 comparison in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics examined literature-derived measurements for the Milky Way and other spirals, primarily galaxies seen edge-on. The authors compared features including disk scale length and height, disk flatness, the mass ratio of thick to thin disks, bulge-to-total luminosity, and spiral-arm pitch angle. They concluded that many Milky Way parameters are ordinary for local spirals. The important qualification is that the Milky Way’s thick disk appears appreciably thinner and less extended than expected in the particular Milky Way-mass galaxy simulations considered in the study. This does not establish that every spiral’s thick disk is larger, or that the Milky Way is unusual by every measure. Read the 2024 structural comparison.
How large and massive is it?
NASA describes the Milky Way’s stellar disk as more than 100,000 light-years across. That is a measure of the visible stellar disk, not the full extent of the galaxy’s dark matter halo. The boundary used for a disk measurement matters, so a size comparison is meaningful only when galaxies are measured on a like-for-like basis. NASA’s galaxy overview gives the disk-span figure.

A 2019 NASA report on a Hubble and Gaia study gives the Milky Way a total mass of about 1.5 trillion solar masses and calls it fairly normal for a galaxy of its brightness. This is an estimate of total mass, including the dominant dark matter contribution—not the mass of its stars alone. It is not an exact, unchanging constant. The page was last updated in 2025. Can spiral galaxies be much bigger?
Yes. The Milky Way is not at the upper end of spiral-galaxy size. A 2016 NASA/JPL report described a rare class called super spirals. In that study, these galaxies were reported as eight to fourteen times as bright as the Milky Way, up to ten times as massive, and with disks two to four times as wide. The largest disk cited spanned 440,000 light-years, and their star-formation rates reached up to 30 times the Milky Way’s. These are exceptional examples, not a typical spiral-galaxy benchmark, and the figures are the findings reported for that study. NASA/JPL’s 2016 report on super spirals covers the discovery.

How to make a fair galaxy comparison
A photograph alone can mislead: a face-on spiral shows its arms clearly, while a side-on view can hide them. Astronomers also compare quantities that are not interchangeable. Use these distinctions when interpreting a claim that one spiral is bigger, heavier or more active than another:
- Structure: Check whether the galaxy is barred, and account for its viewing angle and visible features.
- Size: Find out whether the figure measures the stellar disk and what boundary convention is used; do not treat disk span as the full halo extent.
- Mass: Separate stellar mass from total mass, which includes dark matter.
- Disk shape: Measurements such as scale length, scale height and thick-to-thin disk structure capture different aspects of a disk.
- Activity: Star-formation rate and central black-hole activity are separate comparisons and should be tied to the measurement being reported.
These distinctions are why the Milky Way’s structural comparison, total-mass estimate and contrast with super spirals answer different questions. They should not be collapsed into a single, unqualified ranking against an “average galaxy.”

What makes the Milky Way a useful reference?
We observe the Milky Way from inside it, whereas we see other spiral galaxies from outside. NASA describes Milky Way stellar populations as a baseline for comparing populations in other galaxies. That makes the Milky Way useful without making it a universal model: viewing position affects what can be observed, and researchers must compare equivalent measurements.
The galaxy’s central black hole also appears relatively quiet compared with those in other galaxies. NASA notes that astronomers are unsure why.
