The right choice also depends on resolution, what you watch or play, how much of the screen you want to take in, and whether the TV’s full dimensions fit your wall or furniture. No single size formula suits every room or viewer.
Measure your viewing distance first
- Choose the usual viewing position. Measure from where your eyes are when seated to the planned screen position—not from the back wall or the front of the sofa.
- Allow for more than one seat. If people watch from different positions, note the common distances as a range. A size that works for the nearest seat may feel different from the farthest one.
- Use the measurement to make a shortlist. A viewing-distance calculator can work in either direction: enter your distance to see size guidance, or enter a preferred size to see distance guidance. Treat the result as a starting point, not a binding rule. RTINGS’ TV viewing-distance guide and calculator explains its approach.
Choose how immersive you want the screen to feel
Screen size and viewing distance together determine how much of your field of view the TV occupies. A larger screen—or sitting closer—creates a wider viewing angle. That can make films feel more involving, but a screen that fills too much of your view may be uncomfortable or make it harder to take in the whole action. A narrow angle can make details or game interface elements harder to see.
RTINGS’ guide, updated June 3, 2026, labels 30° as a mixed-use reference, 40° as a cinema reference, and 62° as an immersive reference. Its recommendations are guidance rather than ergonomic limits; the site describes its recommended size as the smallest it would recommend for comfortable use at a given distance, not a perfect size for every viewer. RTINGS’ chart and calculator provide the size-and-distance references.
| 55-inch TV viewing target | RTINGS distance reference | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 30° mixed use | 7 ft 5 in | A moderate viewing angle for varied everyday viewing. |
| 40° cinema | 5 ft 6 in | A closer position or larger screen for a more cinematic view. |
| 62° immersive | 3 ft 4 in | A very wide viewing angle, not a default recommendation for every room. |
These are RTINGS’ angular-view references, not a guarantee of comfort. If you are between sizes, consider whether you prefer a screen that is easy to scan at a glance or one that occupies more of your view.

Account for resolution—and compare guidance carefully
Higher resolution generally makes close viewing more practical because individual pixels are less apparent. That does not mean resolution alone determines comfort: field of view, the content, and personal preference still matter. Manufacturer recommendations also use different definitions of “recommended” distance, so figures from different guides are not directly interchangeable.
RTINGS: field-of-view targets
RTINGS frames its guidance around viewing angle and use—mixed use, cinema, or immersive viewing—rather than one universal distance for each size. Use its chart to compare the viewing experience you want, not as a pass-or-fail standard. See the RTINGS guide.

Samsung Canada: separate general and 4K references
Samsung Canada distinguishes a general distance for non-4K viewing from a closer 4K reference. For a 55-inch TV, its table lists 1.7 m (5.5 ft) for general viewing and 1.4 m (4.6 ft) for 4K; for a 50-inch TV, it lists 1.5 m (5.0 ft) and 1.3 m (4.2 ft), respectively. Samsung presents these as reference points and says to consider resolution, layout, intended use, and budget. The page does not show a publication date in the inspected text; it was accessed October 4, 2026. Samsung Canada’s size guide includes its table and calculator.
Samsung also gives two broad rules of thumb: viewing distance in meters × 25 = screen size in inches, and screen size in inches × 1.2 = general viewing distance in inches. It describes their basis as a comfortable 30°–40° field of view. These are approximations, not substitutes for checking the specific size in its table or calculator.

Sony Support: minimum-distance references
Sony Support says its 4K reference distance is 1.5 times the screen’s vertical height and its HD reference distance is three times the vertical height. It explicitly calls the listed distances minimums for reference, adjustable for personal preference and room layout. Examples from its table are:
| TV size and resolution | Sony Support distance reference |
|---|---|
| 55-inch, 4K | 39 in (3.28 ft) |
| 65-inch, 4K | 47 in (3.94 ft) |
| 75-inch, 4K | 55 in (4.59 ft) |
| 85-inch, 4K | 63 in (5.25 ft) |
| 55-inch, HD | 83 in (6.92 ft) |
These Sony figures are minimum-distance references, not broad consensus recommendations. For example, Sony’s 65-inch 4K minimum is much closer than RTINGS’ 30° mixed-use reference of 8 ft 9 in for 65 inches because the guides describe different viewing targets. Sony Support’s viewing-distance guidance explains its measurements.

Sony’s consumer selection page uses another framing: a general rule that TV height equals two-thirds of the distance between the viewer and TV. Because this is not the same as the Support article’s minimum-distance method, use it as a separate manufacturer rule of thumb rather than combining the two into a precise standard. Sony’s TV selection guide provides that guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check that the actual TV fits
A diagonal size is not the TV’s width, and two models with the same diagonal can have different overall dimensions. Before choosing between sizes, measure the usable wall or cabinet area and check the particular model’s listed width, height, depth, and stand dimensions. Include clearance for placement and any stand or mounting arrangement you plan to use. RTINGS advises checking the complete dimensions supplied by the manufacturer rather than relying on screen size alone. RTINGS’ guide also discusses the difference between a size recommendation and a product’s physical fit.

- Measure available width and height at the intended location.
- Check depth, including the stand if you will use one.
- Confirm the model’s full dimensions with the manufacturer, not just its diagonal screen size.
- Consider the planned screen position as well as the furniture or wall measurements.
Choose between sizes that fit your distance and room
If more than one size fits, compare the options against how you actually use the TV. Movies, sports, and games may benefit from a larger, more immersive view; casual viewing or a compact layout may make a smaller screen a better fit. Gaming can also make the size of on-screen interface elements relevant. Keep comfort in the decision: you should be able to follow the action without feeling that the screen is difficult to take in.
Quick Recap
- Everyday mixed viewing: Use a moderate field-of-view target as a starting point, then adjust for the room and your comfort.
- Films and immersive viewing: Consider a wider viewing angle, but do not assume the widest possible view will suit every viewer.
- Sports or gaming: Think about how much detail or interface information you want to see at once, as well as the usual viewing distance.
- Budget and features: Compare these after you have found sizes that both suit your viewing position and physically fit.
A practical size-selection checklist
- Measure eye-to-screen distance from your usual seated position; record a range if seating varies.
- Choose a viewing experience—mixed use, cinema, or more immersive—and use a size/distance guide to shortlist candidates.
- Check whether the TV is 4K or lower resolution, and understand whether the distance figure you are using is a field-of-view target, general recommendation, or manufacturer minimum.
- Compare the shortlisted sizes for your usual content and comfort.
- Verify the exact model’s full dimensions, including stand depth and placement needs.
- Only then weigh price and model features among the sizes that work.
