A black screen does not by itself mean the TV has no power: the cause may be the outlet, a wrong input, a source device, an HDMI connection, or a TV-side fault.
1. Check whether the TV has power
Look for a standby or status light, if your model has one. Press the remote’s power button, then try the TV’s physical power button. Check that the power cord is firmly connected and that the outlet works. If the TV does not appear to turn on, use the manufacturer’s model-specific no-power instructions rather than treating it as a picture or sound problem. 2. Check the TV’s menu and the selected source
Press Home or Menu. If the TV’s own screen appears, the display is working at least well enough to show its interface; investigate the selected input, external device, app, channel, cable, or signal next. If you see a “No signal” message, the TV is on but is not receiving a usable signal from the selected source.
- Press Input or Source and select the connected device’s HDMI port, Live TV, antenna, or other intended source.
- Make sure the cable box, console, streaming device, or other source is powered on.
- Try a different app, channel, or input. Note whether the problem affects one source or everything, including the TV’s Home screen.
If another input or app works, concentrate on the source that failed and its connection or signal. TCL’s troubleshooting steps for a TV that is on but has no picture or sound and source and HDMI checks use this kind of comparison to narrow the problem.

3. Restart the TV and the connected device
A restart can clear a temporary connection or software state, though it is not guaranteed to fix a hardware fault. TCL recommends a 60-second power cycle for this symptom:
- Turn off the TV and the connected source device.
- Unplug both from power and leave them unplugged for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect them and turn them on.
- Select the correct input again.
4. Check HDMI only when an HDMI source is involved
If the problem happens with a console, cable box, streaming player, or another HDMI device, reseat the cable at both ends. Then test another HDMI port and, if available, a known-good HDMI cable. If practical, borrow a cable before buying one. Temporarily connect the source directly to the TV, bypassing receivers, switches, adapters, or other intermediate equipment.

These are diagnostic checks for an HDMI-specific problem, not a general fix for a missing TV menu or a blank screen on every source. If another source works on the same TV, compare the failing device and connection against that working setup.
5. Treat sound and picture as separate clues
Check whether the TV has sound even when its picture is missing, and whether sound works from the TV’s own apps or channels as well as from an external device. A problem limited to one source points toward that source or its connection; a problem across the TV menu, built-in content, and all inputs calls for TV-specific support. These comparisons can narrow the fault, but they do not identify a particular failed component.

6. Reset only after basic checks
Use a factory reset only after the power, source, restart, and relevant connection checks have failed. Reset menus and procedures differ among Roku, Google TV, Fire TV, and other models, and a reset can remove settings. Follow the exact instructions for your TV’s model and platform; TCL’s support guide places factory reset after other troubleshooting steps.

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service if the Home or menu screen never appears, or if the screen remains blank across sources after these checks. Do not open the TV as a general troubleshooting step. Unplug it immediately if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning odor, excessive heat, a damaged power cord, or physical damage.
