Neither Fandom nor independent fan wikis are automatically better. For a reader, choose the specific wiki with the most current, well-sourced information and usable pages. For an editor or community, weigh that wiki’s rules and control against the work of running or moving a site. “Independent” means separate from a platform; it does not guarantee accuracy, neutrality, or quality.

What is the difference between Fandom and an independent fan wiki?

Fandom is a centralized, free, ad-supported wiki hosting service focused largely on pop culture, including television, film, and games, according to MediaWiki.org’s overview of Fandom. Fandom uses MediaWiki software. Its 2020 Unified Community Platform also enabled wikis to use standard MediaWiki again after a period on a heavily modified version. That software history does not establish whether any particular wiki is complete, accurate, or well moderated.

An independent fan wiki is hosted outside Fandom. That separation can give a community a different governance and hosting arrangement, but there is no single independent model: hosts, rules, technical setups, and funding differ from site to site.

Which is better for finding information?

Judge the specific wiki, not the hosting label. Check whether the page has recent revisions, citations, and a clear distinction between confirmed information and speculation. A wiki’s brand or independence does not certify the quality of its articles.

Make sure you have found the current community wiki

  1. Search for the subject together with “wiki.”
  2. Look for a migration notice, successor link, or recent community announcement on the result you find.
  3. Check the dates and links on the page. An older, well-indexed wiki may still appear in search after a community has moved.

Compare the actual reading experience

Open the same kind of page on desktop and mobile. Consider whether ads, embedded media, navigation, accessibility, and loading behavior make it practical to use. In a March 2026 report, GamesRadar reported complaints from GTA Wiki editors about advertising, videos added without consent, and enforcement of content rules. Those are attributed concerns from one migration, not a measured comparison of every Fandom wiki or independent site.

Cross-check consequential claims

For important claims, compare the wiki’s citations with official materials or reliable reporting. If the article lacks sources or its revision history does not show recent attention, look for another source rather than assuming the host’s reputation settles the question.

Which is better for editing?

The answer depends on the community’s rules and what kind of control it needs. Before editing, read the wiki’s account requirements, moderation and dispute processes, page-protection rules, acceptable-content policy, and the rules for changing site features. Recent edits can also help show whether people are actively maintaining the pages.

Fandom describes its communities as open and community edited. Its support information says Fandom does not offer private wikis: pages remain publicly viewable, although administrators can require contributors to log in to edit. That distinction matters if a group needs a closed workspace. Do not assume every independent host offers private access; check the chosen host’s terms.

How do licensing and content reuse differ?

Fandom’s licensing information says wiki text is generally licensed under CC BY-SA unless otherwise permitted. The applicable license for an individual media file may differ, so check the description page for that asset. Before copying material, check both the wiki’s terms and the license attached to each image or other media item, and preserve any required attribution. An article’s text license does not automatically apply to its images.

Fandom’s forking policy discusses licenses that may apply to content and explains Fandom’s position that communities can continue elsewhere. That is not a substitute for checking whether particular text and media can be transferred under their applicable terms.

What does moving a fan wiki involve?

A move can give a community a different hosting and governance arrangement, but it takes sustained work: people must transfer or rebuild pages where permitted, direct readers to the new destination, maintain the hosting, and keep content current. Decide who will manage the new site and what will happen to the old one before moving.

In March 2026, GamesRadar reported that the GTA Wiki had migrated away from Fandom and described earlier departures by other fan wikis. The report shows that migration is a real option, not that it is effortless or right for every community. The GTA Wiki editors also said that more than 60% of their viewers were logged-out mobile visitors. That figure was reported about the GTA Wiki’s audience; it is not a platform-wide statistic about Fandom.

A practical way to choose

What you need What to check
A quick factual lookup Use the site with the most complete, current, well-sourced page; cross-check important claims against official materials or reliable reporting.
A place to contribute Check recent activity, account requirements, moderation rules, and dispute resolution on the specific wiki.
A closed workspace Verify that the host actually supports restricted viewing. Fandom pages remain public, even when editing requires login.
A community deciding whether to move or start a wiki Compare hosting terms, control over policies and site features, licensing, mobile usability, discoverability, and the team’s capacity to maintain the site.

Policies, host availability, and migration destinations can change. Check the relevant policy pages and current community links when making a decision.
