To make an affordable Android phone last longer between charges, start by lowering screen use, check which apps are draining the battery, and use Battery Saver when you need to stretch a low charge. Android menus and features vary by phone maker and Android version, so look for similarly named options if a path below does not match your device.
Make quick screen and sound adjustments
The display is a practical first place to save power. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you stop using the phone. On Pixel phones, Google gives 30 seconds as an example timeout; other phones may use a different default or menu label. See Google Pixel’s battery guidance.
- Look in Settings for Display or Screen timeout to change how long the screen stays on.
- Try adaptive brightness if it keeps the screen readable without making it brighter than necessary.
- Turn off keyboard sounds or vibration if you do not need them; the saving is modest and depends on how you use the phone.
- If your phone has an OLED display, a dark theme may reduce screen power use because black pixels are off. The effect does not apply equally to every display type.
Google’s Android battery-saving guidance also recommends reducing brightness and shortening screen timeout.
Find what is using battery before restricting apps
Check the battery-use screen before changing app settings. On many phones, start at Settings → Battery → Battery usage; the exact names and available details vary. The screen can show whether an app or feature is using an unusual share of power. Motorola, for example, documents reviewing use since the last full charge and opening a high-use item to manage it in its moto g (2025) battery guide.

If one nonessential app is using much more power than expected, review its background activity. Avoid restricting apps simply because they appear on the list: messaging, security, navigation, and other apps may need background access for timely alerts or expected behavior. Google recommends leaving Pixel apps set to Optimized in general; per-app battery settings are available for selected apps in Pixel battery settings.
Turn on Adaptive Battery if your phone offers it
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and can limit activity for infrequently used apps. It is not the same as Battery Saver: it works as an ongoing usage-management feature, while Battery Saver is a temporary mode for conserving charge. Motorola describes Adaptive Battery on supported phones in its battery guidance. Google notes that Pixel optimization after initial setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks to fully take effect, so do not judge it only by the first day.

Use Battery Saver when you need the remaining charge
Battery Saver is useful when you need a low charge to last until you can recharge. Depending on the phone, it can limit background activity and reduce or turn off some features, network behavior, or visual effects. The tradeoff is that apps, connections, or notifications may be delayed. Turn it on from the Battery settings or the phone’s Quick Settings panel if available; labels and controls differ by model. Google explains these tradeoffs in Android Help’s battery guidance.
Reduce radio use and demanding activity selectively
Bluetooth and location can be turned off when you are not using them, and Wi-Fi is a reasonable choice when it is available and convenient. Avoid leaving a hotspot running unnecessarily. If charge is scarce, prolonged navigation, video recording, camera use, or graphics-heavy gaming can also add workload.

These are tradeoffs, not rules to disable essential functions: switching off a radio can cut off a device or service you need. Google Android Help lists connectivity and workload changes among ways to conserve battery, and Motorola’s moto g (2025) guide covers radios and battery use.
Keep battery lifespan separate from daily runtime
Heat can drain a battery faster even while the phone is idle, and prolonged heat can damage it. Keep the phone cool and avoid unnecessary heat exposure. Google Android Help states that “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use” in its battery guidance. You do not need to cycle the battery from full to zero to teach the phone its capacity.

Some models also offer charging features intended to support long-term battery health. Supported Pixel phones offer Adaptive Charging or an 80% charge limit; Pixel’s 80% option prioritizes battery health and therefore leaves less charge available for that day. Motorola documents Optimized Charging on supported models in its charging guidance. These options are model-specific and do not increase runtime from a single charge.

- Review battery usage. Look for an app or feature whose use is unusually high or changed recently, then adjust only the relevant setting.
- Restart the phone. A restart is a simple check before moving to more disruptive fixes.
- Install available updates. Check for Android system updates and app updates; Google includes updating among its recommended battery troubleshooting steps in Android Help.
- Contact support for the exact model. Battery behavior and repair options depend on the device. Google directs users to the manufacturer for model-specific help.
- Consider a factory reset only as a last resort. Back up first: a reset removes phone data and uninstalls apps and their associated data, according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance.
If the phone is old or the battery is physically damaged, ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider whether diagnosis or replacement is appropriate for that exact model. Battery parts and repair procedures are not universal.
