Space Mushroom is a DIY, mouse-sized 6 DoF controller concept that could help with CAD and 3D modeling, but the available sources do not establish that it is “perfect” for those tasks. Its original project, a community Blender adaptation, and commercial 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse products are distinct; software support and setup depend on which one you mean.

What is the Space Mushroom 6 DoF mouse?

Space Mushroom is a hand-held DIY controller described in a December 2022 Hackaday report about Shinsaku Hiura’s project. It replaces the familiar mouse-button-and-pointer approach with a joystick-like interface: three physically linked joystick sensors provide input, and software translates movement across six degrees of freedom (DoF) into on-screen actions. It is not described as moving the pointer by directly tracking the hand through space. Hackaday’s project report

Six DoF refers to movement along three positional axes and rotation around those axes. That combination is useful in principle when manipulating a 3D view or object, where users may need to pan, zoom, and rotate without repeatedly changing mouse gestures or commands. It describes the input dimensions, not the device’s precision, speed, or ease of use.

Does Space Mushroom work with CAD software?

CAD and 3D modeling are plausible uses because they involve orienting virtual objects, and Hackaday specifically identifies those workflows as potential beneficiaries. But the report is a description of a project, not a controlled evaluation. The available sources do not establish compatibility with every CAD application or provide Space Mushroom measurements for speed, accuracy, fatigue, or productivity. Calling it “perfect” for CAD goes beyond the evidence.

3Dconnexion SpacePilot Pro 3D Mouse 3DX-700036
  • Design excellence for engineers
  • LCD workflow assistant
  • Powerful application control
  • Advanced MCAD navigation
  • Superior comfort

Compatibility also depends on the particular build. A community adaptation documents support for Blender only, implemented through a Blender add-on. That is a limitation of that adaptation; it does not by itself establish the software support of the original project. GitHub community adaptation

What does the movement feel like?

A commenter identified by Hackaday as shiura clarified that the motion shown in the demonstration was not continuous: it had multiple steps for each motion axis. The commenter said the video was recorded before fine-tuning and that movement had since become somewhat smoother. This is a qualitative clarification, not a published measurement of smoothness or control performance. Hackaday’s report and comment

How do you build a 6 DoF mouse for CAD?

The sources describe a 3D-printed device built around three joystick sensors, but they do not provide a universal parts list or establish preferred suppliers and part numbers. A documented community adaptation uses two Micro Pro ATmega32u4 boards because the single board available to its author did not have enough analog pins. Treat that as a specific implementation, not a requirement for every Space Mushroom build. GitHub community adaptation

If you follow that adaptation, “Arduino Pro Micro ATmega32u4 board” is a relevant search phrase for the documented controller boards. Before buying parts or assembling the device, check the adaptation’s code and pinout against the exact board listing and version you plan to use. The sources do not verify any particular listing’s compatibility. Joystick components and 3D-printing materials or services are also relevant sourcing categories, but no specific models or vendors are established here.

How does Space Mushroom compare with a commercial 3D mouse?

A commercial 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse is a separate product category and must not be confused with the DIY Space Mushroom. For example, 3Dconnexion’s UK SpaceMouse Enterprise page lists the following features and terms; prices and product details can change. 3Dconnexion UK SpaceMouse Enterprise page

Comparison Space Mushroom SpaceMouse Enterprise
Input Three physically linked joystick sensors, with software translating movement into six DoF actions, as described by Hackaday. 6 DoF sensor, according to 3Dconnexion’s UK product page.
Software support Build-dependent. A community adaptation documents Blender-only support through an add-on. 3Dconnexion’s UK page lists Microsoft Windows and macOS support.
Controls Not stated in the cited project and adaptation descriptions. 12 Intelligent Function Keys, a color LCD, eight keyboard modifiers, five QuickView keys, three CustomView keys, and 31 programmable keys, according to 3Dconnexion’s UK page.
Setup DIY assembly and software; the sources do not establish a universal parts list or guaranteed configuration. Commercial product; the cited page lists a full-size hand rest.
Price and warranty Not stated in the cited project and adaptation descriptions. £359 before VAT or £430.80 including VAT on the UK page when accessed for this research. The page lists a three-year limited hardware warranty, plus one additional year after registration within 90 days.

3Dconnexion also reports that, in a laboratory study attributed to the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO), the time to complete a random task fell by 28%, from 96 minutes to 68 minutes per task, when using a “3D mouse.” The page does not state a publication year for the evaluation in the cited passage. This is a manufacturer-reported result for a commercial 3D mouse study, not a test of Space Mushroom or proof of a benefit in every CAD workflow. 3Dconnexion’s product page and study description
