Use several layers rather than relying on one filter: enable age-appropriate safeguards in the chatbot account, supervise eligible devices and apps with Google Family Link, and set a content level for supervised YouTube accounts. These controls can reduce exposure, but they do not guarantee that a child will never encounter explicit or otherwise unsuitable material. The setup and availability details below reflect official documentation checked October 4, 2026; features and regional eligibility can change.
Which parental controls cover which parts of a child’s online use?
Each control has a different reach. A chatbot’s account settings govern that service; device supervision can manage eligible apps and screen time; and YouTube’s supervised-account settings govern YouTube content. Do not treat any one of them as a universal internet filter.

How to set up ChatGPT parental controls for a teen
Link the parent and teen accounts
ChatGPT’s parental controls require a linked parent or guardian account and teen account. Either the teen or adult can start an invitation, but the teen must accept it. This is not a way for a parent to silently inspect an account.
Choose the settings that fit your household
Once accounts are linked, a parent can manage settings that include reducing sensitive content, saved memories, voice mode, image generation, study mode, and quiet hours. Some settings are enabled by default; quiet hours and study hours are off by default. Quiet hours block access during a scheduled period. Study hours do not block ChatGPT: they make eligible new conversations start in study mode. Some setting changes may take time to apply or affect only new conversations. Consult OpenAI’s current setup and settings guidance for the available options.

Understand what the parent can and cannot see
Account linking does not give a parent access to the teen’s chats, chat history, or real-time activity. OpenAI says safety notifications are limited: they are not real-time monitoring, may not identify every concern, and do not include transcripts. Either person can unlink. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and loses the ability to manage settings or receive notifications for that account.
OpenAI says the ChatGPT for Teens rollout began August 18, 2026, for eligible teen accounts on personal Free and paid plans, with availability varying by region. Accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 through account-provided information, verified age, or age prediction may receive the Teen experience automatically. As of October 4, 2026, OpenAI said rollout was continuing, so some families might not yet see every feature. Check ChatGPT for Teens information for current availability.

OpenAI describes additional safeguards for linked accounts involving graphic content, viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals. The company also says guardrails can be bypassed intentionally. Treat these as risk-reduction measures, not a promise that explicit content will never appear; see OpenAI’s announcement.

For supported devices and supervised accounts, Family Link can manage apps and permissions, set screen-time limits, and restrict mature content on Google Play. It is a device-and-account supervision layer, not a universal filter across every browser, app, account, or cellular connection.

Google’s requirements include supported parent and child devices and accounts, and the parent and child must live in the same country. Family Link is not available everywhere. Before setting it up, check Google’s current Family Link requirements against the devices, accounts, and country involved.
How to limit unsuitable content on YouTube
For a supervised YouTube account, parents can manage settings through Family Center or Family Link, select a content level, and block particular channels. The available levels are age-oriented; choosing a higher level permits a broader range of material. YouTube’s content-settings guide explains the levels and categories.

Restricted Mode is a separate optional setting; it is not the same thing as a supervised account. YouTube cautions in its supervised-kids-account FAQ that “no automated system of filters is perfect.” Use content levels and channel blocking as limits, not guarantees.
What parents should know about Gemini and AI safeguards
Current Google Gemini-specific parental controls and their age or regional availability are not established in the Google materials cited here, so do not assume Family Link provides a particular Gemini safeguard. Check Google’s current Gemini and Family Link help before relying on a specific setting.

A September 2025 Common Sense Media assessment of Gemini access through a child account supervised with Family Link reported that sexual content, drug information, and concerning or highly concerning material reached child accounts in its testing, despite extra filters. That is a dated assessment of the product at that time, not proof of current settings or behavior. The assessment recommended moderation and direct supervision; read its Gemini under-13 evaluation with that date and scope in mind.

A router with parental controls or another third-party filter may add a household-level layer, but do not assume it can block chatbot interactions or explicit material across apps, encrypted traffic, mobile data, and use away from home. Check the product’s current documentation for supported devices and traffic, and compare compatibility, setup, data collection, security practices, and recurring fees before buying or installing it.
Privacy deserves equal attention to filtering. A 2021 IEEE Security & Privacy paper hosted by the FTC reported 170 vulnerabilities in the parental-control products it tested: 8 network devices, 8 Windows applications, 10 Chrome extensions, and 46 Android apps representing 28 Android solutions. Those findings apply to that study’s tested sample; they do not establish that every current product has the same defects. The paper also discussed sensitive data collection, including voice, video, location, messages, and social-media activity. Review the FTC-hosted paper and a product’s own privacy and security terms before enabling monitoring.
A practical setup sequence for families
- Map the services and devices. Identify the child’s chatbot accounts, browsers, devices, and video apps so controls are applied to the accounts and devices actually in use.
- Configure the chatbot account. Turn on age-appropriate safeguards where available. For ChatGPT, link accounts with the teen’s acceptance, review the settings, and agree on what the parent will and will not be able to see.
- Supervise eligible devices. Use Family Link for supported supervised accounts and devices, then review app permissions and screen-time settings.
- Set YouTube limits separately. Choose a supervised-account content level and block specific channels when appropriate.
- Check the result together. Review settings on each account and device the child uses, and revisit them after product updates. For products where coverage is uncertain, do not infer that one successful check covers every app or connection.
- Assess any additional filter’s privacy. Read what data it collects and how it handles that data before installing it, and treat it as a supplement rather than a guarantee.
- Make space for questions. Explain that filters can miss things, talk about responsible chatbot use and explicit content in an age-appropriate way, and make clear which trusted adult the child can approach if something troubling appears.
Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, described OpenAI’s controls as “a good starting point” and said they work best alongside conversations about responsible AI use, clear family rules, and active involvement. His comment appears in OpenAI’s announcement, rather than as a finding from an independent study.
