BYTE’s 50th anniversary marks the September 1975 debut of a magazine devoted to the growing world of small computers and software. Its run continued through the July 1998 issue, leaving a record readers can revisit in digitized archives as well as in physical collections.
Why BYTE’s September 1975 debut matters
The first issue, dated September 1975, introduced computers on its cover as “the world’s greatest toy.” The playful line captured the excitement around personal and small-scale computing, but BYTE’s scope was broader than hobbyist gadgets. It treated small computers and software as a field in their own right.
That anniversary is tied to the issue date, not to a circulation milestone or a later relaunch. The surviving first-issue scan is the primary source for the date and cover wording: BYTE, September 1975.

The Rhode Island Computer Museum describes BYTE’s remit as the entire field of “small computers and software,” with occasional in-depth features on other computing subjects. In practice, that broad framing makes the magazine useful as a window onto how computing developed across machines, software, and related topics, rather than as a journal for a single computer line.

BYTE began publication in 1975 and ended with its July 1998 issue, according to the museum. The Video Game History Foundation Library catalogs the publication dates as September 1975 through July 1998 and lists Green Publishing, Byte Publications, and McGraw-Hill among its publishers. It also records that the final issue was shut down under new owners CMP Media. These dates establish the magazine’s publication span; they do not by themselves establish circulation or readership.

The Rhode Island Computer Museum lists issues #1, #2, and #3, as well as issues from 1981–1997, in its physical archive description. If the goal is to locate a particular article or follow a topic across issues, a searchable PDF archive is the more practical starting point. Page images can also help you inspect original layouts and advertisements. For a physical copy, condition, completeness, and the accuracy of a seller’s description matter; the sources here do not establish current listings or prices.
The September 1975 issue is a natural starting point for a collector or history reader, but its existence in an archive is not evidence that a copy is currently for sale. Verify any listing, including issue date and condition, before purchasing.
