A Dragino LoRaWAN gateway receives LoRa radio traffic from end devices and forwards it over an IP connection to a LoRaWAN server. To choose one, match its radio frequency version to your devices’ regional frequency plan, then check that the gateway’s internet connection and forwarding method work with your server. The gateway is one part of a deployment; it does not automatically provide the server or network service.

What a Dragino LoRa gateway does

A gateway bridges LoRaWAN end devices and IP-connected network infrastructure. End devices communicate with it over LoRa radio; the gateway then forwards traffic to a LoRaWAN server over an internet connection. The server and gateway are separate parts of the system, so plan both the gateway’s network access and the destination server.

Dragino describes the LPS8N as an open-source indoor gateway with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular connectivity. Its documentation lists a Semtech packet forwarder and LoRaWAN Station support. Dragino also specifies an SX1302 concentrator with 10 programmable parallel demodulation paths; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent performance comparison. Which frequency version do you need?

Choose the gateway hardware that matches the LoRaWAN regional frequency plan used by your end devices. A gateway with the wrong radio band will not become compatible just by changing a server setting.

How to choose a Dragino gateway

Start with the end devices’ regional plan

Check the LoRaWAN region configured for your end nodes and choose compatible gateway hardware. For the LPS8N, Dragino lists distinct 868 MHz and 915 MHz variants. Do not assume those versions are interchangeable.

Check connectivity at the installation site

Determine how the gateway will reach your IP network. LPS8N documentation lists Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and cellular connectivity. Verify the exact options for the model and revision you intend to use rather than assuming every Dragino gateway has the same interfaces. Dragino LPS8N product documentation

Match its forwarding method to your server

Gateway-to-server forwarding options differ by model. The LPS8v2 documentation lists Semtech UDP packet forwarding, LoRaWAN Basic Station, and ChirpStack MQTT Bridge. Confirm which method your chosen server supports and follow the instructions for your exact gateway model. Dragino LPS8v2 user manual

What to check during setup

  1. Identify the end-node frequency plan. Confirm the region required by your devices and select matching gateway hardware.
  2. Plan the IP connection. Choose an available connection at the installation location, such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular where the selected model supports it.
  3. Choose the receiving server and forwarding method. Make sure the server is available and that the gateway’s documented forwarding option matches it.
  4. Use the manual for the exact model and software. LIG16, LPS8, LPS8N, and LPS8v2 documentation should not be treated as interchangeable. Dragino’s download directory lists an LPS8 manual dated 2021-07-05 and a firmware directory modified 2024-07-10; consult the current documentation for your specific device before applying older instructions. Dragino LPS8 downloads
  5. Check the server address and frequency configuration. Set the frequency plan to match the end nodes and verify that the configured server address matches the server you intend to use. Dragino’s LIG16 manual includes server connection guidance and calls out matching the configured address to the server setup in its example. Dragino LIG16 downloads and manual

Why there is no single best Dragino gateway

The right model depends on the end devices’ regional band, the connectivity available where you will install the gateway, and the forwarding method supported by your LoRaWAN server. The documentation establishes different capabilities across models, but does not establish current prices, stock, warranties, or availability. Check those details with the seller before buying.
