Seaberry Pi is a Mini-ITX carrier board that gives a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 many physical PCIe connection options, including an M.2 Key M socket intended for an NVMe SSD. The essential caveat: all those connectors share the CM4’s single PCIe Gen 2 x1 interface. Seaberry adds flexibility, not eleven independent PCIe lanes.

What Seaberry Pi is—and what you need

Seaberry Pi is a carrier board, not a complete Raspberry Pi computer. You need a Compute Module 4 (CM4) to use it. CM4 models vary in RAM, onboard eMMC storage and wireless configuration, so choose a module that suits the system you intend to build. Raspberry Pi’s CM4 product brief lists RAM capacities of 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB, and storage options with no eMMC or 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB of eMMC.

CNX Software’s November 2021 specification report also lists Radxa CM3 and Pine64 SOQuartz compatibility. That is a reported compatibility claim, not a guarantee for every module revision or configuration; check current board documentation before choosing a non-CM4 module.

How many PCIe connectors does it provide?

A 2021 layout report describes eleven PCIe connector positions:

  • PCIe Interface Expansion: Designed with a 16PIN PCIe interface based on Raspberry Pi 5, enabling smooth PCIe interface expansion.
  • Flexible Combination: Allows for flexible configurations, easily stacking multiple PCIe HAT modules for enhanced functionality.
  • PCIe Gen2 Speed: Supports PCIe Gen2 (PCIe 2.0) speed for reliable data transfer and efficient performance.
  • Exclusive Compatibility: Fully compatible with Raspberry Pi 5, ensuring optimal performance and versatility in various applications.
  • One x16-length slot wired for x1.
  • One x1 slot.
  • Four mini PCIe slots.
  • Four M.2 Key E slots.
  • One M.2 Key M socket, specified for an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD.

The connector count describes physical options, not separate host lanes. Raspberry Pi specifies a PCIe Gen 2 x1 interface on the CM4, and Seaberry’s expansion connects through that one interface. Multiple devices therefore share the same upstream connection; the connector variety can make different add-ons easier to connect, but does not create additional PCIe bandwidth.

Can you use an NVMe SSD?

The M.2 Key M socket is reported as a route for an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD using the CM4’s x1 PCIe connection. The specification identifies the intended drive type and size; it does not establish compatibility with every SSD or report a validated model or benchmark. The SSD is a separate component, and actual results depend on the drive, software and shared PCIe connection.

How Seaberry compares with the official CM4 IO Board

Raspberry Pi’s official CM4 IO Board is a general-purpose development carrier with a single PCIe Gen 2 x1 socket. The practical distinction is connector choice: Seaberry’s reported layout offers many types of expansion sockets, while the official board keeps PCIe expansion to one socket. Neither changes the CM4’s single-lane PCIe interface.

Availability and support

CNX Software’s 2021 article reported a Tindie listing, but that historical listing does not establish current price, stock, board revision or vendor support. Check the seller’s current listing and documentation before purchase. Raspberry Pi says CM4 will remain in production until at least January 2034, according to its July 2026 product brief; that lifecycle statement concerns the module, not Seaberry availability.
