Wiretrustee’s compact four-bay SATA carrier for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 was a proposed NAS design, not a product you can order: Crowd Supply now marks the project abandoned and says it “will not launch.” Its intended hardware connected four SATA drives through a controller attached to the CM4’s single PCIe lane, so even the reported single-port speed should not be mistaken for four-drive aggregate performance.

What happened to the Wiretrustee CM4 NAS carrier?

The Wiretrustee project page on Crowd Supply now lists the project as abandoned and says it will not launch. The board should therefore be understood as an archived hardware concept, not a current retail option. Its page also reproduces Jeff Geerling’s comment: “I’ve built a few Raspberry Pi NASes in my day, but none were *this* nice.”

The original idea was a small carrier board that would turn a Compute Module 4 (CM4) into the basis of a four-drive NAS. The proposed carrier was not itself a complete, ready-to-run NAS: the design called for a CM4 and SATA drives, and a working storage server would also need suitable software and setup.

What the planned carrier was designed to include

Wiretrustee described a 100 × 100 mm, four-layer PCB with four SATA 3.0 ports. Its project-page specifications also listed Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, a microSD slot, fan connector, HDMI, a battery-backed real-time clock (RTC), UART, and 12 V DC input. These are planned-design specifications; they do not establish that production hardware shipped.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Drive connections: The project page said 2.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs would plug in directly. It said 3.5-inch drives would need extension cables.
  • Compute module: Wiretrustee said the carrier would support all CM4 variants. Its microSD slot was intended for CM4 Lite modules without onboard eMMC; the page described a firmware-flashing mode using the top-side USB 2.0 port for eMMC-equipped modules. That is the project’s compatibility claim, not an independently tested result.
  • Power and cooling: The listed 12 V input and fan connector indicate that power delivery and airflow were part of the intended build, but the project page does not establish how a finished system would perform with particular drives.

How four SATA ports shared the CM4 connection

CNX Software’s February 1, 2021 report identified a Marvell 88SE9215 SATA controller between the CM4’s PCIe 2.0 x1 interface and the four drive connections. The controller was described as providing SATA 2.0 ports rated at 6 Gb/s each. That port rating is not the same as throughput available to all four drives at once: their controller traffic shared the CM4’s single PCIe lane.

CNX Software reported approximately 220 MB/s on an individual SATA port at a time. The report did not present that figure as simultaneous throughput across four ports, and it did not provide a test method or an independent primary benchmark. Treat it as dated secondary reporting, not a verified performance guarantee for a finished NAS. The source is CNX Software’s 2021 report.

Which CM4 variants and setup paths were intended?

Raspberry Pi’s CM4 documentation describes the module as based on the Raspberry Pi 4, with a Broadcom BCM2711 processor, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, or 8 GB RAM options, and Lite (no onboard eMMC) or eMMC variants. The CM4 uses two 100-pin high-density connectors and exposes PCIe.

Wiretrustee said its proposed carrier supported all variants, with different ways to handle storage and setup:

  • CM4 Lite: use the carrier’s microSD slot for the module’s boot storage, as described on the project page.
  • CM4 with eMMC: the project page described using a firmware-flashing mode through the top-side USB 2.0 port.

These paths explain the intended design, but they do not constitute a verified compatibility test. Raspberry Pi’s official CM4 IO Board documentation describes that separate board as a development and reference carrier for exposing module interfaces. It can be a platform for experimentation; the cited documentation does not establish a complete four-drive NAS setup using it.

What to check before planning a CM4 four-drive NAS

Because the Wiretrustee board will not launch, anyone planning a similar build needs to evaluate other hardware on its own merits rather than assume this design is available. The sources cited here do not establish a currently obtainable substitute. Compare the following before choosing a carrier or assembling a system:
