A portable power station is quiet and produces no combustion fumes, but its stored energy is finite and cold may limit charging or output. A gas generator can keep supplying electricity while fuel lasts, but it produces deadly carbon monoxide (CO) and must be operated outdoors, safely away from buildings. Choose by matching your essential appliances to the exact unit’s output, then checking runtime or replenishment, temperature limits, and safe placement.
How the two options compare
| Consideration | Portable power station | Gas generator |
|---|---|---|
| Air and exhaust | Battery and solar power stations do not give off combustion fumes, according to the U.S. EPA. | Combustion produces exhaust, including CO. It must be operated outdoors and sited safely. |
| How long it can run | Limited by stored energy and the connected load. Recharging requires the grid, suitable solar input, vehicle charging, or another compatible source. | Can keep generating while fuel and maintenance allow. There is no universal runtime or fuel-use figure; check the exact model and load. |
| Output to check | Compare continuous and surge watt ratings with the planned loads, especially motors and heating equipment. | Compare running and starting wattage with the generator’s continuous and surge ratings, including loads used at the same time. |
| Cold weather | Charging and output limits depend on the model and may be restricted at low temperatures. | Cold starting and weather protection depend on the model, fuel, maintenance, and instructions. |
| Placement and weather | Follow the unit’s instructions for indoor use, moisture, and temperature. It has no combustion exhaust. | Must be outdoors and at least 20 feet from the house or other buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents. |
| Replenishment | Needs an available compatible charging source; winter solar input may be uncertain. | Needs fuel. The CDC says not to store gasoline indoors. |
| Maintenance | Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for charge and storage. | Inspect and maintain the generator according to its manual and labels. |
What can you safely power during an outage?
Start with the devices you need to keep running, not with a product’s headline wattage. Check each appliance’s label or manual for running watts and, for motors, starting or surge watts. Record how many hours you expect to use each one and whether several will run at the same time.
- List essential loads such as a refrigerator, communications equipment, lights, medical equipment, or a furnace blower.
- Check the power source’s continuous output against the combined load that may run simultaneously, and its surge rating against motor startup needs.
- For a power station, compare capacity in watt-hours (Wh) with the energy your planned use requires. Watts (W) describe how quickly power is delivered; watt-hours describe stored energy.
- Allow for inverter losses, temperature effects, appliance duty cycles, and a reserve when estimating battery runtime. A simple capacity-to-load calculation is only an approximation, not a runtime guarantee.
- For a generator, check fuel consumption at the load you expect to use, rather than assuming a general runtime applies to your setup.
Do not assume a station can run a furnace or a resistive space heater: check the specific appliance’s power requirements and the station’s limits. A furnace blower and controls use electricity, but the furnace’s heat comes from its fuel source. Neither a power station nor a generator, by itself, is a safe way to heat a home. The EPA warns against using combustion appliances such as gas stoves, ovens, and grills to heat a home. If indoor temperatures become unsafe, the CDC advises seeking shelter when conditions are too hot or too cold.
When a portable power station makes more sense
A power station can suit selected essential loads when quiet operation, no combustion exhaust, and avoiding outdoor generator placement matter. The trade-off is finite stored energy: you need to manage what is connected and have a compatible way to recharge if the outage lasts longer than the available charge. Solar replenishment can be uncertain in winter.

Cold limits are model-specific. Jackery’s Explorer 1500 Ultra product information specifies charging from 32°F to 113°F and discharge from 5°F to 113°F; it says output is limited to 1,000 W below 14°F. These are manufacturer-stated specifications for that model, not independent test results or a standard for all power stations.
Jackery’s general temperature guidance, updated July 2, 2026, lists different ranges by battery chemistry: LiFePO4 products are listed for discharge from −10°C to 45°C and charging from 0°C to 45°C; NCM products are listed for discharge from −10°C to 40°C and charging from 0°C to 40°C. The guidance says ranges vary by battery type and points users to the model specifications. Cold-weather discharge permission does not mean charging is allowed at the same temperature. Keep the unit within its specified range and warm it only as its manufacturer permits; do not improvise with a heater or place it near flame or combustion exhaust.

When a gas generator makes more sense
A generator may suit people who need sustained electrical output and can safely operate it outdoors with fuel available. Compare the exact generator’s running and starting ratings with your simultaneous loads, and account for fuel consumption at the load you expect. There is no supported one-size-fits-all runtime comparison between generators and power stations.
A CO shut-off feature is worth looking for, as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends, but it does not make indoor operation safe. A generator produces deadly exhaust and must remain outside, correctly positioned, and protected from weather only as its instructions allow.

Generator placement and carbon monoxide safety
The CPSC’s February 19, 2026 winter-storm release states: “NEVER operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed spaces.” Opening a window does not make indoor or enclosed operation safe. The CPSC also attributes nearly 100 portable-generator CO deaths per year in the United States to its latest report in that release; this is a national annual figure, not a per-generator rate.
- Place the generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the house or other buildings, with the exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents, as the CDC winter-storm guidance advises.
- Install working battery-operated or battery-backup CO alarms. The CPSC recommends alarms on each level and outside separate sleeping areas.
- Use individual heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords for appliances connected to the generator, as the CDC advises.
- Do not operate electrical equipment when wet. Follow the generator manual for snow, rain, shock hazards, and any approved cover.
- Store gasoline outdoors, not inside the home, as the CDC advises.
The EPA notes that battery and solar power stations do not give off fumes; that does not mean they have no other hazards. Follow the unit’s instructions for placement, use, charging, and weather exposure.

Choose based on the outage you need to cover
- Consider a power station if your essential loads fit its continuous and surge output, its stored energy covers the expected use, temperatures remain within the model’s limits, and you have a plausible recharge plan.
- Consider a gas generator if you need sustained electrical supply, can replenish fuel, and can maintain the required outdoor distance and CO precautions.
- Rework the plan if you need heat the equipment is not rated to provide, cannot safely site a generator, or do not know the appliances’ wattage and startup demands.
The answer for a specific household depends on its essential-load list, outage duration, local weather, fuel and recharge access, safe siting, and exact equipment. The cited guidance is U.S.-focused; local rules and product availability may differ.
