You usually cannot tell whether an image is AI-generated just by looking at it. Treat odd or alarming media as a reason to pause, verify where it came from and confirm urgent claims through a contact method your family already trusts. If a child is targeted, support them, preserve the messages and report the abuse—whether the image is real, altered or entirely synthetic.
Can you recognize an AI-generated image by sight?
Not reliably. The FBI warns that AI-generated and AI-modified images, audio and video can convincingly imitate real people, and that distinguishing manipulated media from authentic media is getting harder. A visual oddity may justify checking an image, but it does not prove the image is fake; an image that looks convincing does not prove it is genuine.
There is no dependable consumer checklist established here. Distorted details, strange reflections, inconsistent text or detector scores should not be treated as a verdict. Focus instead on the image’s source, the claim attached to it and independent confirmation.
Check the source and the claim
- Ask who first posted or sent the image. Look for an original post or confirmation from a credible, independent source.
- Consider whether the sender is pressing for secrecy, immediate action or payment. Urgency is a reason to slow down, not proof of a kidnapping or other emergency.
- Verify through a phone number or channel already known to your family—not contact details supplied in the suspicious message.
- Do not click its links, download attachments, forward the image or pay before verifying what is happening.
What kinds of scams and abuse use manipulated images?
Fake kidnapping or proof-of-life demands
A scammer may claim a loved one has been kidnapped and demand fast payment, using altered imagery to make the story seem credible. The FBI warns that criminals may use photos or videos found publicly online as supposed proof of life. Contact the loved one or another family member using a previously trusted channel, and report the attempt.

Sextortion and threats to share images
A perpetrator may use a fake profile to solicit or obtain sexual material, then threaten to send it to a child’s family, friends, followers or school unless the child pays. The FBI also describes manipulated images being used for coercion. Do not shame the child or assume that paying will stop the threats.
Sexualized deepfakes of real children
A real child’s public or private photograph can be manipulated into sexualized content. Calling an image fake does not make the abuse harmless: a child’s likeness may have been used without consent, and the threats, humiliation and exposure can cause real harm. UNICEF said on 4 February 2026, “Deepfake abuse is abuse, and there is nothing fake about the harm it causes.”

The scale is difficult to establish from any one case. UNICEF, ECPAT and INTERPOL reported in 2026 that at least 1.2 million children across an 11-country study disclosed that their images had been manipulated into sexually explicit deepfakes in the past year. This is a self-reported finding from those countries, not a global incidence count.
Impersonation and pressure
A message that appears to come from a relative, friend or authority figure can exploit fear even without convincing media. Confirm the person’s identity out of band. Never share account passwords, PINs or authentication codes in response to an unexpected message.

What should you do if a child is targeted?
- Reassure the child. Tell them they did the right thing by speaking up and that they are not in trouble. The FBI advises families to avoid blame and keep communication open.
- Stop the interaction. Do not pay, send more images, click suspicious links or negotiate alone. If there is immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services.
- Preserve evidence safely. Keep messages, usernames, account links, dates and threats. The FBI advises against deleting chats or shared media and recommends taking screenshots of communications. Do not forward or repost explicit images of a minor; ask the reporting service or law enforcement how to handle that material.
- Block and report. Report the account and content to the platform. The FBI identifies the FBI, NCMEC or local law enforcement as reporting options; a child can also start by telling a trusted adult and using NCMEC resources.
- Request removal when eligible. In the United States, FTC guidance directs people to TakeItDown.ftc.gov for qualifying explicit images or videos of a child. Under the FTC’s September 2026 explanation of the Take It Down Act, covered platforms must provide a removal-request process and remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours after a request. This legal requirement is U.S.-specific; eligibility and remedies elsewhere vary.
How can families reduce exposure?
These precautions can reduce opportunities for misuse, but they cannot guarantee that a photo will not be copied or manipulated.
- Review social-media privacy settings and limit publicly visible personal details and photos.
- Keep devices and apps updated; use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available.
- Agree that a child can bring suspicious requests or threats to a trusted adult without being blamed or punished.
The FBI’s guidance focuses on verification, reporting and keeping communication open. UNICEF defines deepfakes as “images, videos, or audio generated or manipulated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) designed to look real.” Platform processes and legal remedies vary by country.
