It does not mean the entire services market is shrinking: demand for AI-related services can rise at the same time that competition and pricing pressure intensify. Whether a provider’s margin improves or worsens depends on its costs, contract terms, utilization, investment and ability to win work.
What does “AI deflation” mean in IT services?
Here, deflation refers to the price per unit of service or the labor needed to produce a result. It is not a claim about general consumer prices or falling prices for AI models. If AI-assisted tools help a team complete a defined task in fewer hours, a buyer may expect a lower price, more output for the same fee, or both.
Forrester’s Q2 2024 analysis described AI-enabled automation as a source of efficiency with a deflationary impact on service providers, and warned that providers tied to time-and-materials pricing may struggle. That is a qualitative account of the mechanism, not a measured industry-wide price decline. Forrester’s analysis
The distinction matters: productivity is a change in how much effort delivery requires; pricing is the commercial result negotiated between client and provider. The productivity gain might initially improve the provider’s economics, be passed to the buyer at renewal, or be shared through terms tied to outcomes.

Will AI make IT services cheaper?
It can put downward pressure on prices, but the available evidence does not establish a universal price cut or a sector-wide percentage caused by AI. The effect varies by service, buyer, provider and contract. A provider may also face competition from firms using similar tools, which can push prices down even when demand remains strong.
ISG’s Q2 2026 index reported that combined global managed-services and cloud-based as-a-service contract value rose 43% year over year to a record $42.4 billion. The index covers commercial outsourcing contracts with annual contract value of at least $5 million. ISG also described increasing competition, pricing deflation and provider-funded AI transformation becoming embedded in contracts. Those findings show that demand and price pressure can coexist in this segment; they do not establish that every type of IT services work is growing or getting cheaper. ISG’s Q2 2026 index

How contract type affects who captures productivity savings
The same efficiency gain can affect a provider and client differently depending on how payment is calculated. The comparison below is a practical framework, not a standardized quantitative ranking of realized margins by contract type.
| Contract model | How the provider is paid | Where AI productivity pressure may appear | Questions to settle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time and materials | Hours or effort consumed | Fewer hours can mean less billable revenue unless rates rise or the provider sells more work. | Are rates fixed? How are AI tools and saved hours treated? |
| Fixed price | An agreed fee for defined scope | If scope, quality and fee stay stable while effort falls, the provider may keep the efficiency gain until competition or renewal changes the economics. | Can scope and acceptance be measured? Who bears rework and delivery risk? |
| Outcome or consumption based | An agreed result or measured usage | Payment is more directly tied to delivered value or usage, rather than simply to headcount or hours. | How is the result measured, audited and attributed? Who funds the transformation? |
Forrester discusses movement toward fixed-price and outcome-aligned approaches, while ISG notes that providers increasingly fund AI transformation as part of contracts. The latter can help a client adopt AI without separately paying the full upfront cost, but it also means the provider must account for transformation costs and expected savings in the deal. Will AI reduce IT services companies’ margins?
Not necessarily. A provider’s margin can increase if delivery costs fall faster than prices; it can decline if prices fall faster than costs, utilization weakens, or investment in transformation rises. These factors can move in different directions at once, so revenue or margin changes alone do not isolate AI’s effect.
IBM reported 1.8% consulting revenue growth in 2025 and said segment profit and margin reflected productivity actions, partly offset by strategic investment and innovation. This is IBM’s explanation of its own results, not a clean estimate of AI’s causal contribution or a template for every provider. IBM’s 2025 results

Other company figures illustrate why activity and performance measures should not be treated as proof of AI deflation. Capgemini reported 3.2% constant-currency growth in Strategy & Transformation consulting revenue in 2024, with generative AI bookings close to 4% of group bookings that year. Those figures indicate business activity; they do not measure realized AI-driven price reductions or margin gains. Capgemini’s FY 2024 results
IBM separately reported that Technology Consulting revenue declined 3.2% year over year in 2024, in a context that included client reprioritization and spending constraints. That decline should not be attributed solely to AI. IBM’s 2024 results

What buyers and providers should examine in a contract
When estimating the commercial effect of AI, focus on the unit of work, the payment trigger and the allocation of risk—not just a headline productivity claim. Useful points to make explicit include:
- Scope and baseline: Define the deliverable, expected quality and the effort or service level against which changes will be assessed.
- AI-related savings: Specify whether saved hours reduce invoices, fund additional scope, improve provider margin, or are shared at renewal.
- Measurement and attribution: For outcome- or consumption-based fees, agree how results or usage are calculated, audited and attributed to each party.
- Rework and risk: Clarify responsibility for errors, acceptance failures, security requirements and remediation when AI-assisted delivery is used.
- Transformation costs: Identify who pays for tools, integration and process changes, and how those costs affect the fee or savings arrangement.
- Renewal and competition: Consider how comparable providers, changing scope and improved productivity may affect future rates or contract terms.
These terms help distinguish a real reduction in cost per result from simply moving hours or transformation spending elsewhere in the contract.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
The cited material supports a qualitative case for pricing pressure and contract renegotiation, alongside demand for AI-related technology services. It does not provide a comparable, sector-wide estimate of AI-caused price reductions or isolate AI as the cause of reported margin changes from utilization, wages, service mix, investment and demand. Forrester’s analysis is from 2024; ISG’s Q2 2026 figures cover only larger commercial outsourcing contracts; and company disclosures describe company-specific results and explanations. Allianz Research’s sector perspective
It is therefore more accurate to treat “AI deflation” as a pricing and business-model risk than as proof that services prices or provider margins are falling everywhere.
