White Jet Process (WJP) is Sailner’s proprietary inkjet-like 3D-printing process. In published medical workflows, it is used to make patient-specific anatomical models from medical imaging for visualization, surgical planning, education, and communication. The model can help a clinical team examine anatomy in three dimensions, but the available sources do not show that WJP models alone improve patient outcomes.

What is White Jet Process 3D printing?

WJP deposits thin layers of photosensitive resin and cures them with ultraviolet light, repeating the process layer by layer. A JoVE protocol describes it as inkjet-based printing; Sailner markets its own implementation as full-color, multi-material, and voxel-level. “White Jet Process” is Sailner’s name for its process, not a generic term for all material-jetting or PolyJet printers. JoVE’s protocol describes the process, while Sailner’s product information presents the company’s capabilities.

In practical terms, the printer turns a prepared digital model into a physical object. For medical use, the important work starts before printing: the digital anatomy must be derived from imaging, checked, and prepared for the intended purpose.

How a patient-specific medical model is made

A JoVE protocol for a thyroid cancer model documents a workflow using enhanced CT images in DICOM format. In that protocol, imaging was obtained within one week before surgery, with slice thickness of 1 mm or less. Those are details of that particular workflow, not universal requirements for every anatomy, institution, or printer.

  1. Acquire imaging: Start with suitable patient scans, such as the enhanced CT images used in the thyroid protocol.
  2. Segment the anatomy: Use threshold-based and manual methods to separate relevant structures from the image data.
  3. Reconstruct and review: Convert the segmented anatomy into a 3D reconstruction and have clinicians review a preview with the engineering team.
  4. Export and prepare: Export the approved model as an STL file and prepare it in the printer software, including assigning colors where appropriate.
  5. Print and finish: Print with WJP, then perform the protocol’s post-processing steps: support removal, cleaning, grinding, varnishing, and UV curing.

The workflow depends on more than the printer. Imaging quality, segmentation choices, engineering work, clinician confirmation, material selection, and finishing all affect the physical model. The JoVE protocol specifically describes surgeon-engineer interaction before production. See the JoVE thyroid-model protocol for the documented method.

What medical teams use the models for

Surgical planning and anatomical visualization

A physical, patient-specific model can make the position and relationship of structures easier to inspect than a set of two-dimensional image slices alone. The JoVE thyroid protocol presents its model as a way to make anatomy and variation more visible to clinicians and patients, with surgical planning and communication as motivations. A clinical review of complex paracardiac tumors also describes planning cases and summarizes earlier model technologies.

The cardiac review’s table includes two 2016 cases using WJP, describing flexible or rigid, multicolor models of cardiac structures and masses. The review covers models made with other printing processes as well, so its broader examples and outcomes should not be attributed to WJP. Read the clinical review of complex paracardiac tumors.

Education and communication

A tangible model can serve as a teaching aid or support conversations about anatomy and a proposed procedure. These are documented intended uses and motivations; they should not be confused with proof that a particular model changes a treatment decision or its result.

Institution-facing model services

Sailner lists individualized surgical-planning models for the heart, liver, kidney, intracranial tumors, and lungs, and identifies them as services for medical institutions. The company page also lists registration numbers for several models. Separately, the MIIT Equipment Industry Development Center reported that Sailner had supported more than 5,000 preoperative planning and simulation cases in 2024. That is a reported case-volume figure, not an independently audited total or a measured clinical benefit. Sailner’s medical service page and the MIIT Equipment Industry Development Center provide the respective descriptions.

What current WJP product claims establish

Sailner’s J401Pro product page describes a seven-material configuration and a maximum resolution of 600 × 600 × 1,800 dpi. The manufacturer also lists full-color, transparent, rigid-flexible composite, and voxel-level texture printing capabilities. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparisons against other printers. Check Sailner’s J401Pro product information.

Sailner also lists institution-facing patient-specific model services. A separate 2026 trade-show report says the Medical J401 holds National Class II Medical Device Certification. Regulatory claims apply to the named product and jurisdiction; they do not establish that every WJP printer, resin, printed model, or use is covered. The words “medical-grade” in product naming are not, on their own, a complete regulatory determination. Sailner’s service page and the 2026 trade-show report are the relevant descriptions.

How WJP fits among medical 3D-printing options

WJP is one way to produce anatomical models, not the only technology used for medical 3D printing. The cardiac review documents examples made with multiple processes. When evaluating a model or service, the useful questions are whether it is patient-specific or generic, whether the anatomy calls for rigid or flexible materials, what color and transparency add, how the imaging-to-model workflow is reviewed, and whether the product’s regulatory scope matches its intended clinical use.

WJP also appears outside institution-facing medical services: in June 2024, JLC3DP announced a full-color resin printing service that accepts texture-map or vertex-color files. That establishes a general printing-service option, not clinical suitability, medical-device status, or certification. See JLC3DP’s WJP service information.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Documented: WJP uses jetted photosensitive resin cured with UV light, and published workflows describe patient-specific medical models made from imaging data.
  • Documented uses: Sources describe visualization, planning, education, and communication applications, including selected thyroid and cardiac examples.
  • Not established: The cited material does not demonstrate that WJP models themselves improve survival, reduce complications, or outperform models made using other technologies.
  • Interpret with care: The reported 5,000-plus cases are a provider-related case-volume claim, not a controlled clinical comparison or outcome statistic.
