If Wi-Fi is fast on other devices but slow on one, start by checking that device’s connection, location, Wi-Fi band, adapter capability, software, and VPN or security settings. Compare it fairly with a faster device, then try it on another network. These tests help narrow the cause; they do not, by themselves, prove that the device is faulty or that the router is blameless.
First, make sure the comparison is fair
Test the slow device and a faster one on the same Wi-Fi network, in the same place, at roughly the same time, and with a comparable speed test. A device farther from the router, connected to a different access point, or using a different band may get a different result even when both are on the same household service. Microsoft recommends comparing with another device on the same network, and Ofcom notes that device and location affect Wi-Fi performance.
- Confirm both devices are connected to the same network name, not a guest network or mobile hotspot.
- Put them near each other for the test, ideally close to the router.
- Pause large downloads or streaming where practical so network activity does not distort the comparison.
Find out whether the problem follows the device
Try the slow device close to the router, then connect it to a different trusted Wi-Fi network. The pattern is useful evidence, not a definitive diagnosis:
| What you observe | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The device is slow on multiple Wi-Fi networks | Its band selection, adapter capability, drivers or updates, and VPN or security software. |
| The device is slow only on the home network | Router band support, firmware, placement, interference, or settings; a device and router can interact differently. |
| Several devices are slow on the home network | Router placement, coverage, interference, or the home connection; contact the router maker or ISP if basic checks do not help. |
Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide recommends testing another device on the same network. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance also explains that device and location can influence results.

Check the Wi-Fi band and adapter capability
A router may offer 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz Wi-Fi. The slow device may be connected to a different band from the faster device, or it may not support the band or Wi-Fi capability the router offers. If the router has separate network names for its bands, try another one that the device supports.
Microsoft notes that 5 GHz generally offers faster throughput than 2.4 GHz, while 6 GHz can perform well close to the router with compatible newer equipment. Higher frequency is not automatically faster everywhere: range, walls, and congestion matter. Check the device’s specifications or adapter settings before assuming it can use a particular band. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home layout guidance for band and range context.

Rule out distance, walls, and interference
Move the slow device nearer the router and retest, keeping the faster device in the same position for comparison. Walls, distance, metal objects, and nearby sources of radio interference can weaken or disrupt a connection. Apple lists microwaves, power cables, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones among potential sources, and recommends moving closer and reducing interference. Its wireless interference guidance describes symptoms that can include slow connections and low signal strength.
If the problem is limited to one room, compare performance in a clearer line of sight to the router. A result that improves nearby points toward a coverage or interference issue, though it does not rule out other causes.

Check software and settings on the affected device
Windows
- Run the Windows network troubleshooter and check whether the wireless adapter supports the router’s frequency.
- Use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s guidance to check for an appropriate Wi-Fi driver update.
- Try simpler checks before using Network reset. Microsoft warns that a reset may require networking software, such as a VPN client, to be reinstalled or set up again.
Follow Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting steps for the relevant version and adapter.
iPhone or iPad
Check whether the issue happens only on one Wi-Fi network, confirm that the router supports the device and has current firmware, and test another available frequency if possible. Apple also advises checking VPN and third-party security software when a device has network connectivity problems. If the device is managed by work or school, ask its IT administrator before removing or changing security settings. See Apple’s guidance for Wi-Fi connection problems on iPhone or iPad and VPN and third-party security software.

When to suspect hardware or contact support
If one device stays slow across networks after you check its band, software, and settings, contact the device maker or a repair provider. An adapter may be limited or faulty, but the symptom alone does not establish that it needs replacement. A compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter may be an option for some laptops if testing points to the built-in adapter; check operating-system, port, and Wi-Fi-standard compatibility first. It is not a general fix for phones or tablets.
If multiple devices are slow on the home network, or the affected device works normally elsewhere, investigate the router and home Wi-Fi setup after checking placement and band support. Apple recommends checking router compatibility and firmware as part of troubleshooting Apple-device Wi-Fi issues. Ofcom’s consumer guidance is UK-specific; readers elsewhere should consult their local regulator or ISP resources.
