It is a radio front-end module (FEM): pair it with a compatible Nordic wireless SoC, protocol and application firmware, then design the lighting, power and outdoor installation around them. Nordic estimates a theoretical 6.3–10× range improvement with an nRF52 or nRF53 SoC; that is not a measured distance or a guarantee for a particular home or yard.
What the nRF21540 does in a lighting system
The nRF21540 is a complementary RF front-end module with an integrated power amplifier (PA) and low-noise amplifier (LNA). It connects to the antenna output of a compatible wireless SoC and is intended to improve radio-link robustness. Nordic lists support for Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Zigbee/IEEE 802.15.4 and proprietary 2.4 GHz applications. The module also provides two additional antenna ports for diversity; its transmit power, gain control and antenna switching can be managed through SPI, GPIO pins, or both. See Nordic’s nRF21540 product page and its Product Specification.
In a holiday-lighting design, the FEM is one part of the radio path—not the whole control system. A compatible SoC runs the selected wireless protocol and application. Separate system design is needed for LED driving, power, user controls, firmware behavior and network topology. Adding an nRF21540 to an existing consumer light string will not, by itself, make that string wirelessly controllable or compatible.
How much farther could the lights reach?
Nordic estimates that pairing the nRF21540 with an nRF52 or nRF53 SoC can improve the link budget by 16–20 dB, corresponding to a theoretical 6.3–10× range improvement. This is a vendor estimate, not an independently measured distance for holiday lights. The reviewed official materials give no field-range result for a house, yard, antenna arrangement or finished installation.

- DEVELOPMENT BOARD: The NRF21540-DB is a specialized RF front-end development board designed for wireless applications and prototyping
- RF CAPABILITIES: Features an RF front end module that enhances the radio performance and range of Nordic Semiconductor wireless solutions
- COMPATIBILITY: Designed to work seamlessly with Nordic Semiconductor's nRF series microcontrollers and development kits
- PERFORMANCE TESTING: Enables thorough testing and evaluation of RF front-end functionalities in wireless system designs
- APPLICATIONS: Ideal for developing and testing wireless products, IoT devices, and RF communication systems
Actual reach depends on the complete radio design and deployment, including the chosen protocol and network topology, host-SoC compatibility, antenna placement and orientation, required link reliability, power budget and local transmit-power limits. A robust design should be evaluated in its intended installation rather than inferred from a range multiplier alone.
Component specifications and what they mean
Nordic’s product overview reports up to +20 dBm TX output power and +13 dB RX gain. It also describes output adjustment up to +21 dBm. The Product Specification’s key-features table separately lists maximum output power as 22 dBm and adjustable output gain from 5 ±1 dB to 21 ±1 dB. These are differently worded specification entries; use the current specification and the applicable operating conditions when making a design decision rather than treating them as one interchangeable output figure.

| Component figure | Value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Transmit current | 110 mA at +20 dBm output; 38 mA at +10 dBm output | nRF21540 component-level figures in Nordic’s product overview and specification, not whole-system consumption. |
| Receive current | 2.9 mA | nRF21540 component-level figure; not whole-system consumption. |
| Power-down current | 45 nA | nRF21540 component-level figure. |
| Supply range | 1.7–3.6 V | nRF21540 component specification; the complete system needs its own power design. |
| Operating temperature | -40 °C to 105 °C | nRF21540 component range, not an outdoor-use rating for the assembled controller or light string. |
Nordic’s product page identifies the temperature range as a fit for professional lighting when used with compatible SoCs such as the nRF52820, nRF52833 or nRF5340. The nRF21540 DK uses an nRF52840. A component’s temperature range does not establish that a finished controller, enclosure, power supply, wiring or light string is suitable for outdoor exposure.
Choosing a practical prototype architecture
Before selecting hardware or writing control firmware, define the installation and the radio behavior the system needs. The nRF21540 does not choose these for you.

- Protocol and topology: Decide whether the design needs a direct link, a mesh arrangement or another supported 2.4 GHz approach. Match the protocol to the intended control behavior and compatible SoC.
- Host compatibility: Select a Nordic SoC that supports the intended application and can work with the FEM. The nRF21540 DK offers one evaluation combination: its nRF21540 FEM and nRF52840 SoC.
- Coverage and reliability: Define where the transmitter and lights will sit, where control must work, and what level of missed commands is acceptable. Assess the link in that layout; the vendor’s theoretical range estimate is not a site measurement.
- Antenna arrangement: Plan antenna placement and whether the FEM’s diversity ports and switching are useful for the installation.
- Power and regional limits: Budget the radio and the rest of the system together. Nordic notes that adjustable transmit level can help designs stay within allowable regional power, but legal limits depend on jurisdiction and product configuration.
- Outdoor and electrical design: Treat enclosure, environmental exposure and any mains-powered portions as separate engineering requirements. Nordic’s reviewed FEM materials do not provide a holiday-lighting schematic, LED-driver choice, weatherproof enclosure design or mains-safety treatment.
Using the nRF21540 DK
The Nordic nRF21540 DK is the most directly relevant development hardware for evaluating this radio architecture. Nordic describes it as a development platform for designs that need the FEM’s range extension or link-budget improvement. It combines the nRF21540 with an nRF52840 SoC and includes buttons, LEDs, I/O, a debugger, UART and USB. It is for development and evaluation, not a finished holiday-light controller. Product details are on Nordic’s nRF21540 DK page.
A sensible prototype sequence is to bring up the supported SoC-and-FEM radio configuration, implement and verify the chosen control protocol, then test radio behavior in the intended antenna layout. Only after that should the design be integrated with the separately engineered LED driver, user interface, power system and outdoor enclosure. The reviewed Nordic materials do not provide a complete lighting schematic or finished-system firmware.

What the nRF21540 does not establish
The FEM’s specifications and theoretical range estimate cannot answer how far a particular holiday-light setup will work. The official materials reviewed do not provide a field measurement for this project or a complete design covering the LED driver, firmware, weatherproofing and mains safety. Nor do they establish specific transmit-power legal limits for every region. These aspects require decisions and validation for the actual product and installation.
