Who can export ChatGPT data?
OpenAI’s current guidance lists ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts, as well as eligible ChatGPT Edu workspaces, for exports requested in Settings. Settings export is unavailable when you are logged out and is not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. If your account is managed by an organization, ask its workspace owner about access to organization-managed data. OpenAI’s export instructions describe these account limits.
Additional requirements for Edu workspaces
An Edu workspace must not have a data-residency configuration, and an administrator must enable export permission for the member’s default or assigned custom role. Members request and download their own exports. If you do not see the Export data control, ask an Edu administrator whether both the workspace and your role are eligible. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu export guidance explains these conditions.
How do I export my ChatGPT history and data?
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose data you want to copy.
- Open the profile menu and choose Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Under Export data, choose Export.
- Confirm the request.
- Watch the email address or phone number associated with the account for a ready notice. Open the download link while signed into the same account that requested the export.
- Download the ZIP and extract it. Check that the conversations and other files you need are present, then store the archive securely.
OpenAI says delivery can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after receipt. These are published service timeframes, not a guarantee for an individual request. If an export is still processing, wait for it to finish before submitting another. If the link expires, request a new export through Settings or the Privacy Portal. OpenAI Help Center export instructions provide these time limits.

Request a copy through the Privacy Portal
If Settings export is unavailable or you cannot sign in, use the OpenAI Privacy Portal. Submit a privacy request, choose the consumer ChatGPT account option, select Download my data, and follow the account-verification steps. The available information does not establish that this route produces a different archive from a Settings request.
What does the ChatGPT export ZIP contain?
OpenAI describes the ZIP as containing chat history and other relevant account data. The exact contents can vary; the named files below are examples, not a guaranteed, exhaustive inventory for every account or export.

- Conversation data: The archive may include
conversations.json. Larger exports may instead divide conversations among numbered JSON files. - Files and assets: It may include files or other assets used in conversations.
- Account and conversation metadata: The Edu export guidance lists these as possible contents.
- Shared-link records: If relevant, look for a
shared_conversationsfile. OpenAI says it contains the link ID, conversation ID, title, and anonymity setting. It records link metadata; it is not a substitute for opening and checking each conversation. OpenAI’s shared-links FAQ describes this file.
OpenAI’s support pages do not provide an exhaustive file list for every account type or a field-by-field guide to every JSON property. Treat the archive you receive as the authoritative record of what that request produced.
How to review and secure the export
- Confirm that the ZIP downloads and extracts successfully.
- Check that it contains the conversations and other data you expected. Look for the example JSON files and assets if they matter to your use case, but do not assume every export includes each named file.
- If shared-link records matter, check for
shared_conversations. Its presence does not verify that every linked conversation can still be opened. - Keep the ZIP and extracted files in a private, secure location. Exports may include sensitive account information; avoid public or shared folders and do not send the files to an untrusted service.
- If you are moving or merging a personal workspace into a managed workspace, download and inspect your export first. OpenAI cautions that after the personal workspace is removed, the old download link may no longer open and another export may no longer be requestable. See OpenAI’s export guidance.
What an export cannot do
An export cannot restore conversations that were already deleted. It is a copy of data, not an account-recovery or migration feature.

You can upload exported conversation JSON to a new conversation in another personal account for reference, but that does not recreate each old chat as a separate conversation, restore the old sidebar, merge accounts, or transfer subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, or workspace access. If the export is large, its conversation data may be split among numbered JSON files. OpenAI suggests uploading numbered files separately, splitting the JSON, or selecting only the conversations you need if a file is too large to upload. OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions explain this reference-only method.
