Use AI interview practice tools before an interview; don’t use a live assistant to generate answers during an evaluation unless the employer explicitly permits it. Preparation and real-time help are different uses, and rules vary by employer and stage. Check the invitation and assessment instructions, then ask the recruiter if anything is unclear.
How are interview practice tools different from live AI assistants?
An interview practice tool helps you prepare before evaluation begins: it can generate mock questions, help you organize real examples, support spoken rehearsal, and give you a chance to reflect on clarity and delivery. A live interview assistant listens to or captures questions and supplies answers while the interview or assessment is underway.
The key difference is not simply whether AI is involved. It is when the tool is used and whether it helps you prepare or substitutes for your own judgment during the evaluation. Employers including Bumble, PNC, Deloitte and Anthropic explicitly distinguish preparation from live or assessment assistance.
Can you use AI during a job interview?
There is no universal rule. Permission depends on the employer, the stage of hiring, and the instructions for that interview, assessment, or exercise. For example, Bumble says candidates may use AI to prepare, research, practice and refine ideas, but not to generate, suggest or refine answers in real time unless a stage is explicitly an AI collaboration exercise. PNC says using AI to practice questions, research the company or reflect on past experience is appropriate preparation. Unless the instructions expressly say otherwise, it says candidates should not use AI to generate answers or assist during live interviews, and should complete assessments and take-home exercises without AI. - Deloitte US: permits AI before interviews for company and role research and communication practice, but says not to use real-time assistance, AI-generated answers, talking points or work product during interviews or assessments unless explicitly allowed. Read Deloitte US’s guidance.
- Pfizer: encourages practice before an interview but prohibits AI and other external tools from generating answers in live or recorded interviews, and restricts AI in assessments unless specifically allowed. Read Pfizer’s guidance.
- College Board: says its live interviews—including video screens, hiring-manager interviews and panel interviews—should be completed without AI assistance tools or third-party recording software. - USA Hire: an Applicant Resource Center article updated July 29, 2026 says AI use during its assessments is prohibited and treated as assistance. It describes a certification of independent work and warns that dishonest conduct can result in disqualification and other consequences. This is a specific federal assessment rule. - U.S. Department of State: says AI tools may not aid written application responses and warns that violating this policy may end candidacy. This guidance concerns written application materials; it should not be treated as a rule for every interview or employer. Read the Department of State FAQ.
How should you practice for an interview with AI?
Use the tool to prepare your own thinking, not to invent a stronger-sounding version of your career. Bumble and Anthropic both emphasize authentic experience and ideas. Anthropic encourages candidates to prepare with Claude, including by generating practice questions and getting ready to explain genuine technical achievements, while advising against AI use during assessments unless permitted. - Read the interview invitation, assessment brief and employer careers policy. Find the rule for the specific stage you are entering.
- If the instructions do not clearly address AI, ask the recruiter before the interview. Permission for one stage does not automatically cover another.
- Ask a practice tool for role-relevant mock questions. Answer using real examples, then verify any factual claims it suggests about the employer or role.
- Rehearse aloud and use feedback to improve structure, clarity and concision. Keep the underlying experience and judgment yours; do not memorize claims you cannot explain.
- During the evaluation, answer in your own words unless the employer expressly invites AI collaboration. If AI is part of a designated exercise, follow that exercise’s rules and be ready to explain your process.
A paper notebook or job interview practice workbook can also help you collect authentic examples, rehearse concise answers and prepare questions without entering information into an AI tool. No particular workbook is established here as accurate, current or worthwhile.

What should you check before using an interview tool?

| Privacy | What audio, transcripts, prompts or résumé context leave your device? Which provider receives them, what is retained, and for how long? |
| Accessibility | If you need captions, transcription or another adjustment, what setup has the employer approved? |
Do not enter confidential employer, client, assessment or personal information into a third-party AI service unless its use and handling are approved. Bumble cautions candidates against sharing confidential information with AI tools, and Canadian public-service guidance also highlights confidentiality, security, data protection and intellectual property considerations.
Privacy statements are specific to the product describing its own handling. CoPilot Interview says audio capture and transcription occur locally, while the transcribed question, optional uploaded résumé context and a system prompt are sent over HTTPS to the AI provider selected by the user. It says the transcript and response remain in app memory until the session closes, and optional session summaries can be saved locally. This is the vendor’s account of its service, not an independent audit or evidence about other tools. What if AI use is allowed or needed as an accommodation?
Follow the exact terms of the invitation or exercise. Some processes deliberately include AI collaboration, require candidates to identify AI-generated content, or allow a specified tool only at certain stages. The Public Service Commission of Canada advises organizations to state which tools and stages are allowed, communicate consequences, and require identification of AI-generated content where required. Its guidance is for public-service hiring practice, not a universal private-sector policy. Read the Canadian guidance.
If AI support would help with accessibility—for example, captioning, transcription or note-taking—raise the need with the recruiter ahead of time and ask what setup is approved. Bumble specifically asks candidates to discuss AI-based accessibility adjustments in advance; do not assume that permission for an accommodation means any live answer-generating assistant is also permitted.

Do practice tools improve interview results?
The employer guidance supports using AI for preparation, but it does not establish that a particular product improves hiring outcomes or outperforms another. No verified comparison of product effectiveness, candidate success rates, policy prevalence, prices or detection rates is available here. Choose a practice approach for its fit with the employer’s rules and your preparation needs, rather than relying on an unsupported performance claim.
