To reduce vendor lock-in when building with an AI API, keep provider-specific calls behind a small interface your application owns, retain prompts and other behavior-defining assets in version control, and test realistic workloads against alternatives. An OpenAI-compatible API can make a first integration easier, but it does not guarantee equivalent features, outputs, or migration effort. Portability is something you design for and keep measuring.

What AI API lock-in looks like

Lock-in is the work required to move an application when its provider, model, or API changes. It can come from more than the API call itself: prompts, tool schemas, orchestration, stored state, retrieval, and assumptions about a model’s behavior can all become provider-specific. A thin wrapper around a request does little if the rest of the product depends on hosted tools or undocumented behavior.

The practical goal is not to make every provider interchangeable. It is to know which parts of the application can move, which depend on a provider’s native capabilities, and what it would take to replace those capabilities.

Choose an integration approach deliberately

These approaches trade control for convenience. The right choice depends on the features your workload actually uses, not just whether two endpoints accept similar chat messages.

Approach What it helps with Costs and limits Best fit
Native provider APIs behind your own interface Centralizes application calls while allowing provider-specific features. Your team implements and maintains adapters and feature mappings. A small provider set, or workloads that need native capabilities.
OpenAI-compatible endpoint Can reduce changes for common request shapes. Native features may be absent; schema translation and tool mapping may still require work. Google notes that the OpenAI schema does not map one-to-one to Gemini’s architecture and that compatibility can introduce translation complexity (Google’s Gemini partner integrations guide). Common chat-style requests, after verifying the features you need.
Provider-aware SDK, router, or gateway Can centralize provider selection and common message or tool mapping. Adds a dependency layer; support and semantics vary by provider and backend. Teams using several providers that can validate their exact routes and features.
Provider-hosted agents, tools, or state Can simplify initial implementation through integrated capabilities. Switching may require rebuilding orchestration or replacing provider-specific features. Teams that value integration convenience more than easy switching.

When comparing options, examine feature coverage for your workload, provider-specific code and special cases, control of prompts, state, tools, and logs, adapter maintenance, migration effort, and measured quality, latency, and cost on representative tasks.

Keep the provider boundary small and explicit

Define an application-owned interface around the operations the product needs, such as text generation, streaming, tool calls, and structured output. Keep translation between that interface and each provider’s request and response formats in adapters. Avoid trying to reproduce every provider feature in a universal abstraction when the product does not use it.

Make unsupported features visible. If a route cannot provide a required tool or input type, return a clear error or route to a deliberate alternative rather than silently changing the request. OpenAI’s Agents SDK warns that provider differences can affect structured output, multimodal input, hosted tools, and request semantics, and recommends filtering unsupported inputs and validating the backend when those features matter (OpenAI Agents SDK: Models).

Compatibility should be tested at the feature level. Google describes its OpenAI-compatible approach as useful when a unified Chat Completions schema matters, while noting limitations for Gemini capabilities such as File API and Google Search grounding. A familiar endpoint shape therefore does not establish that a particular feature or behavior will transfer.

Own the assets that shape behavior

Keep prompts, tool definitions, schemas, model configuration, orchestration, and evaluation cases in version control where possible. These artifacts explain how the application behaves and give a replacement effort something concrete to adapt and test.

OpenAI’s Assistants migration guidance describes snapshotting, diffing, versioning, and rolling back prompt specifications, with orchestration handled in application code (OpenAI Assistants migration guide). The same principle applies if prompts are edited in a provider dashboard: keep an application-owned source copy or export, and validate changes before rollout.

Test portability with representative workloads

A demo request is not a migration test. Build a regression set that reflects real use, including successful cases, difficult inputs, failures that matter to the product, tool calls, and structured-output checks. Run it against the current provider and any candidate backend.

  1. Capture expected behavior. Save representative inputs, tool interactions, schema requirements, and acceptance criteria as versioned test cases.
  2. Run each candidate through the same cases. Record task success and inspect outputs for correctness, not just whether the API returned a response.
  3. Compare operational costs. Measure latency, token use, and cost per successful task. A cheaper request can be a worse choice if it needs retries or fails more often.
  4. Check feature-specific behavior. Verify streaming, tool selection, structured outputs, multimodal inputs, and other capabilities your product uses on the exact provider and route.
  5. Roll out cautiously. If your architecture supports it, route a limited share of traffic to the replacement, monitor results, and expand only when it meets your acceptance criteria.

OpenAI’s deployment guidance identifies task success, latency, token categories, and cost per successful task as useful evaluation dimensions (OpenAI deployment checklist). Its function-calling documentation also provides relevant guidance when tool calls are part of the workload (OpenAI function calling guide).

Plan for API and model changes

Model identifiers, API versions, and hosted product surfaces can change or be retired. Monitor provider deprecation announcements, record which application paths depend on affected features, and leave time to test replacements rather than treating migration as an emergency task. OpenAI publishes deprecation dates and migration paths in its documentation (OpenAI deprecations).

A replacement plan should identify a candidate model or provider, the regression cases it must pass, feature gaps that need code changes, and a rollout and rollback path. Revisit the plan when your provider changes its APIs or your own workload changes.

What an abstraction can—and cannot—promise

A common interface can reduce the number of places that need edits when you switch providers. It cannot guarantee identical model behavior, feature coverage, tool semantics, output quality, latency, or cost. Those differences need explicit adapter logic and recurring evaluation. Treat portability as a measured engineering property: know the migration surface, preserve the assets needed to move, and test a real replacement before depending on the promise of compatibility.
