Depending on your account and settings, it can use saved memories and relevant context from past chats, custom instructions, Library files, or connected apps. Those sources—and the chats or files themselves—are separate from one another, so deleting one does not necessarily remove the others.
What ChatGPT Memory can use
OpenAI describes Memory as a way to personalize responses using relevant context. Depending on your account, enabled features, and workspace settings, that context may come from saved memories, past chats, custom instructions, Library files, or connected apps. Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation, and the information it considers useful can change over time. Availability also varies by plan, region, platform, and workspace. OpenAI’s Memory overview explains the feature and its current controls.
Saved memories
Saved memories are details you ask ChatGPT to remember, or details it may save as useful context when that behavior is available. They are stored separately from chat history. Depending on the controls available to your account, you can review, correct, or delete them. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ explains why removing a chat does not automatically remove a separate saved memory created from it.
Reference chat history
When Reference chat history is enabled, ChatGPT can draw on relevant information from previous conversations when it is likely to improve an answer. It does not use every detail from every chat as memory, and the derived information can change. Turning this setting off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days; the original conversations remain in chat history unless you delete them separately. OpenAI documents this distinction in its Memory overview.

The memory summary is not a full inventory
The summary shown in the interface is a high-level view and may omit details or the sources Memory can reference. Depending on your interface, you may be able to edit or correct the summary, ask ChatGPT what it remembers, inspect sources, or manage saved memories. Do not assume that an item missing from the summary cannot be used as context.
Where to review Memory settings
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the controls shown for your account. Labels may include Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories; not every account shows the same options.
- Use the available controls to inspect, correct, or remove saved-memory information. If a chat, Library file, or connected app supplied the information, review that source separately as well.
OpenAI’s Memory help article notes that controls and availability can vary, so use the labels currently visible in your own settings.

What turning Memory off or deleting information actually does
Turning Memory off does not erase chats. Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from previous chats for deletion within 30 days, but the original chats stay in history unless separately deleted. In some settings experiences, turning off Reference saved memories may also turn off Reference chat history. The controls determine whether ChatGPT can use certain context; they are not a substitute for deleting the underlying source.
To remove information as fully as the available controls allow, check each place it may exist:

- Saved memories: delete the relevant entry through the Memory controls.
- Original conversation: delete the regular chat if you no longer want it in chat history. Deleting the chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory.
- Library files: remove a file if it is the source of the information.
- Connected apps: check the relevant app and its connection or content controls if it supplied the information.
Deletion and updates can take time to propagate. OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging, so removing an item from the interface should not be described as instantly erasing every trace across all systems. How Temporary Chat differs from Memory
Temporary Chat controls whether a particular conversation uses and updates personalization; it is not the same as deleting existing memories or changing the account’s other data settings. At the start of a Temporary Chat, you may be offered a personalized or unpersonalized option.

OpenAI says it may keep a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes. The option to save converts the conversation into a regular chat, subject to the account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. See Temporary chat in ChatGPT for the current behavior.

Memory determines whether ChatGPT can use personal context to tailor responses. Model-improvement settings concern whether chats and remembered information may be used to improve models. For personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI says it may use chats and remembered information for model improvement when Improve the model for everyone is enabled. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default.
