A stronger FM signal can take over a weaker station on the same frequency because the receiver’s limiter and demodulator tend to follow the stronger signal and suppress the weaker one. This receiver behavior is called the FM capture effect. It can make a station seem to switch abruptly while you are driving, rather than letting you hear both stations mixed together.
Why does another FM station suddenly come in on the same frequency?
FM capture happens when competing FM signals fall within a receiver’s passband. If one signal has enough strength over the other, it can dominate the receiver’s processing, leaving the weaker signal effectively inaudible. The broadcaster has not switched off the other station; the change happens inside the receiving radio.
That is why a station can seem to “pop” into the channel during a drive. As your location changes, the relative strength of two stations on the same frequency can change too. The receiver may then favor the station that has become stronger at that spot.
How does the FM capture effect work?
FM carries audio as changes in the signal’s frequency. A receiver first uses a limiter to reduce amplitude variations, then recovers the frequency variations as audio. With two competing signals present, the stronger one can dominate the limiting and demodulation process, suppressing the weaker signal in the output.

A useful analogy is two people speaking into a microphone that can clearly follow only one voice: the voice with an advantage tends to come through. But a radio does not consciously choose a station. Capture is a consequence of the receiver’s electronic stages, and the details depend on the limiter and demodulator design.
What is capture ratio?
Capture ratio is the difference in received signal levels needed for the stronger signal to suppress the weaker one under a specified receiver and test condition. A lower capture-ratio figure means the stronger signal needs less of a level advantage to achieve suppression.

H. Ward Silver’s July 2004 ARRL article describes 1.5 dB as a good capture ratio and notes that, in some circumstances, even a 1 dB difference could achieve complete suppression. These are explanatory examples, not a promise about every radio: capture depends on receiver design and the conditions used to measure it.
Do not treat capture ratio as interchangeable with every use of the term capture threshold. A Virginia Tech-hosted radio systems textbook describes an FM capture threshold typically on the order of 10 dB in audio communications as part of a signal-to-noise discussion. That broader threshold describes a related operating condition, not a universal consumer-tuner capture-ratio specification.

Where listeners notice FM capture
- Driving: A station on the same frequency can suddenly replace the one you were hearing as your position changes the signals’ relative strengths.
- Repeater use: If two stations transmit at once, the stronger signal can suppress the weaker one until the stronger transmission ends.
- Co-channel interference: Capture can make a weaker competing signal less audible, but it can also abruptly erase the station you wanted when another signal becomes stronger.
How is FM capture different from AM interference?
With co-channel AM reception, multiple stations can remain audible together. FM capture more often lets the stronger signal dominate and suppress the weaker one. This difference does not mean FM is free of interference: competing signals and changing reception conditions can still disrupt listening.

- the stated capture-ratio value;
- the test method and the criterion used for suppression;
- the received-signal conditions; and
- whether the measurement concerns broadcast wideband FM or another FM service.
Even when two figures use the same unit, they may not be directly comparable if the test conditions differ. The cited sources establish that capture varies with receiver design; they do not provide a standardized comparison of current consumer radios.
