Its project page outlines a parts list and possible uses, but does not document a completed aircraft build or measured range, flight time, payload, power use, or field performance.
What SkyMesh proposes
Rehan Fazal’s Hackster.io project, published September 27, 2025, describes a drone-mounted LoRa mesh relay. The idea is to raise a Meshtastic node above the ground so it can relay messages among compatible nodes, or to use the device as a ground node. The project is explicitly marked “Work in progress.” Hackster.io’s SkyMesh project page presents this as a design direction, not a validated communications system.
Meshtastic’s documentation explains that LoRa radios can rebroadcast messages they receive, creating a mesh for text messaging; it also describes optional GPS-based location features. That establishes how the platform is intended to work generally, not how a drone-mounted SkyMesh installation performs. Meshtastic’s introduction calls the project “100% community driven and open source!”—the project’s own description.

The Hackster page lists these components and tools, without identifying a completed, tested aircraft configuration:

- Radio node: A Seeed Studio Wio Tracker L1-family Meshtastic development kit, naming L1, L1 E-ink, or Lite options, with a LoRa antenna included.
- Aircraft: A quadcopter described generically as a medium-payload drone. A DJI F450 frame or similar DIY build is an example, not a tested recommendation.
- Mount: A custom lightweight 3D-printed mount or case.
- Power: A Li-Po battery pack or an auxiliary connection to the drone’s power system.
- Messaging and checks: The Meshtastic mobile app for testing and messaging.
- Fabrication tools: A 3D printer, soldering iron, wire cutter/stripper, screwdriver, and hot glue gun.
- Optional ideas: Solar charging and a higher-gain external antenna.
Seeed describes the Wio Tracker L1 series as Meshtastic nodes with LoRa radio covering 862–930 MHz, an nRF52840, and an L76K GPS module. The family includes Lite, L1, Pro, and E-Ink versions. These are manufacturer’s family-level specifications; SkyMesh does not say which variant was used in a final aircraft build. Check the exact model and radio region before selecting hardware. Seeed’s Wio Tracker L1 introduction lists the family details.
How the airborne relay might help—and what is not shown
Elevating a node is intended to make it a relay point for temporary communication links. The project proposes possible use in disaster response after earthquakes or floods, remote trekking, rural communities, and other situations where a temporary network could be useful. These are proposed applications, not reported deployments or evidence of emergency-service reliability.

The source set does not establish SkyMesh’s operating range, flight duration, payload mass, takeoff-weight effect, current draw, wind tolerance, interference behavior, or performance when multiple drones are used. It also offers no measured comparison between the listed hardware choices. General descriptions of LoRa or Meshtastic cannot be treated as test results for this aircraft concept.

A useful evaluation would first identify one complete configuration: the exact Wio Tracker L1 variant and regional radio setting, antenna, power source, mount, and aircraft. Testing could then report repeatable results with the location, terrain, flight conditions, node placement, and messaging setup stated. Relevant measurements would include whether messages relay reliably at different distances and altitudes, how long the aircraft remains aloft with the installed payload, and how the node’s power arrangement affects operation.

The Hackster page also mentions future possibilities such as solar charging, multiple-drone networks, and satellite links. It does not report that these have been implemented or tested as part of SkyMesh. Drone operating rules depend on jurisdiction and date; the project materials do not establish requirements for any particular location.
