Chat history is the record of your conversations; ChatGPT Memory is personalization context that can be stored separately or drawn selectively from past chats. They work together, but they are not the same: deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete a saved memory, and turning Memory off does not erase your chat history.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Memory and chat history?
Chat history is the conversation record associated with your account. Saved memories are selected details stored separately so ChatGPT can personalize future responses. A third feature, Reference chat history, can let ChatGPT use relevant information from earlier conversations without turning every detail into a saved memory.

OpenAI says ChatGPT does not retain every detail from every past conversation. Reference chat history is meant to use relevant context when it is likely to improve a response, not to reproduce or search every conversation for every answer. The memory summary, where available, is a high-level view and may not include everything ChatGPT remembers. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guide explains these distinctions.
How do the controls affect your chats and memories?
Turning a personalization setting off changes how ChatGPT uses or retains that type of context; it is not the same as deleting the conversation that supplied it. The exact controls available vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings.

- Turn off Memory: This does not delete past chats. Separately delete any conversations you no longer want in your history.
- Turn off Reference chat history: OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The original chats remain in history unless you delete them yourself.
- Delete a chat: This removes the conversation, but a saved memory created from it may remain until deleted separately.
The 30-day period applies to information remembered from past chats after Reference chat history is turned off; it is not a promise that the associated conversations will be deleted. See OpenAI’s documentation for the current behavior.
How to review or remove ChatGPT memories
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory to see the memory controls available to your account. Depending on your configuration, you may find options such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Labels and availability are not identical for everyone.

- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the available memory controls and saved-memory list or summary. You can also ask ChatGPT to remember or forget information, where supported.
- To remove a specific saved detail, delete that memory and delete the chat where it originated.
- Check other places where the detail may exist, including archived chats, Library files, and connected apps, and remove it there if appropriate.
Turning a control off alone may not erase the underlying conversation or every separate source of the information. OpenAI notes that deletion and updates can take time to propagate. Its Memory in ChatGPT guide describes the removal behavior and available controls.
What happens in Temporary Chat?
Temporary Chat does not create or update memories while it remains temporary. If you save a temporary conversation as a regular chat, it follows the account’s normal personalization settings; when Memory is enabled, the saved conversation may be used accordingly. Which should you manage: Memory or chat history?
Choose based on what you want to change. If you want to remove a conversation, manage chat history. If you want ChatGPT to stop using a saved detail, remove the saved memory and its source where needed. If you want to stop ChatGPT drawing on past conversations, turn off Reference chat history and account for its stated deletion schedule. These actions address different data and are not substitutes for one another.
